How to achieve higher quality audio (guitar) recording??!

Question: How to achieve higher quality audio (guitar) recording!?!?
(this question is kinda involved but i would GREATLY appreciate any help at all!)

so!.!.!. i have all this nice equipment to record with but no idea how to throw it all together and get a high quality recording!.!.!. for starters, i would just like to know how to get a quality guitar line recorded!.!.!. i keep getting a really fuzzy and distant sound that seems to be unmanageable!.!.

here's what im doing now:
i have a les paul plugged into a peavey amp w some equalization options, gain, volume etc!.!.!. i micd the amp with a sure 58a microphone which runs into a pa head (maybe that's unneccessary!?)!.!.!. i turned off the pa speakers themselves, but that pa head has a main output going into a Zoom 10 track recorder which has an input recording level and some effects options and what not!.!. the track that i choose to record on also has gain level (you know, that -10, -5, 0, +6, +12 thing)!.!.!. after i record i listen to the finished product through a surround sound system that the recorders plugged into!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
plug the guitar straight into the zoom 10 track and headphones into the zooms output and record the track dry (no effects, distortion, EQ or anything)

dry tracks are very important, it is nearly impossible to mix without them!. now you have a dry track you

plug the output of your zoom unit into your peavey

plug the mic into a pre amp then into the zoom input (skip the pre amp if you don't have one)

this is called re-amping and it's a great way to never get stuck with a great guitar take with crappy amp settings and sound quality

ohh, you need a shure sm57, the 58a is a vocal mic!. the 57 will do vocals, instruments, amps etc!.!.

your problem is every piece of equiptment you have in between your guitar and recording device is changing or destroying inforamtion from your guitar signal!. if you use that equipment after you have recorded you still keep all the original information from your guitar take!. this will give you much better sound quality and more control over your sound!.
