He set his guitar on fire a couple of times, but the most famous was at the Monterey Pop Festival of 1968!. Hendrix lit his guitar on fire in a "one upsmanship" competition with The Who!.
Both The Who and Jimi Hendrix were known for destroying their instruments at the end of a set!. Therefore neither Pete Townsend nor Jimi Hendrix wanted to play after the other out of fear that they would look like they were copying the other!. This was essentially settled by a coin toss, which The Who won!. The Who played first and destroyed their instruments, Hendrix went on afterwards and after an incendiary (pun intended) set, lit his guitar on fire!.

The show was actually his first performance that was in Monterey, CA!. It was the Monterey Pop Festival, at the Monterey Fairgrounds!. I think it was in 1967!.
I only know this because my band has played the same festival on a different stage, but in 2007!. Now they call it the Rock and Art Festival, and unfortunetly they have the stage covered by this big god awful smelling green tarp, but it is said that you can still see the burn marks!.

1965 Fender Stratocaster, was famously doused with lighter fuel and set alight by the rock legend during a one-off performance at London's Finsbury Astoria in March 1967!.
