Buy or Sell: A classic first album hurts an artist?!
Question: Buy or Sell: A classic first album hurts an artist!?
The argument could be made that because of Illmatic, all of Nas' other work is judged next to it, and therefore is seemingly inferior!. I believe that the fact that Illmatic is widely regarded as the GOAT hurts Nas' other releases!.
On the flip-side of that, the success of that album ensures great album sales to follow!. All of Nas' albums have gone at least platinum!. You cannot argue with the success a masterpiece brings an artist!. However, I pose the question:
Buy or Sell: A classic first album hurts an artist!?
Nas was the prime example, but this really has nothing to do with Nas in particular, it's just in general!. Base your answer off the average artist, not just Nas!. An explanation would be nice as well!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hmm!. A classic album is never usually bad but I think Illmatic is the worst kind of example because that was a completely different type of classic, that was like a perfect classic that you can't beat no matter how hard you try!.!.
But anyway!.!. I partly buy it although a lot of rappers haven't been affected by it!.!.
Although as Crypt said it almost holds your position as a legend right away!.!. And nobody ever knows how long they're gonna be rapping for when they start!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

A classic 1st album is great for an artist!.
That one album will bring you a life long following
The only knock on having a Classic First Album is expectations rise and everybody will be comparing it to later Albums!. and you will be pressured to make all your albums that good!. (which is a good thing)Www@Enter-QA@Com

A classic first album ONLY hurts an artist if said artist can't put out quality material after that!. I will grant you that people initially judged It Was Written to harshly because of the comparison to Illmatic!. But I think most people have become more rational about it since then!. Some of his other albums haven't been criticized *just* because they aren't Illmatic!. They've been criticized because they really aren't that good!.
But there are several examples of artists who put out classic debuts and were able to follow it up with no critical repercussions:
ATCQ
De La Soul
Eric B and Rakim
OutKast
The PharcydeWww@Enter-QA@Com
