There are two similar terms being used (and confused here):

The Classical Era in music, which lasted from approx!. 1730 to 1820, and "classical music", which refers to the genre which encompasses Classical Era music (as well as other eras, such as Baroque, Romantic, the Renaissance, and the Modern Era)!.

Bach wrote music during the Baroque period (1600-1750); Chopin wrote during the Romantic period (1820-1890)!. So technically, neither were "Classical" musicians if you are referring to the time period they wrote in!.

But both composers (as well as Haydn, Mozart, and other truly "Classical" era composers) can be said to have written "classical" music (as opposed to rock, jazz, hip hop, country, or any other musical style!.)

By the way, the term "classical" (or "Classical") is borrowed from the language of Art History (where "Classical" refers to the art of Ancient Greece and Rome)!. The term "classical" in music is used to make an analogy between the era the music was written in and the way historians view the Ancient Greco/Roman empires (which is to say that they view that era as a high point of world civilization, and thus the music they are comparing it with as a high point in the development of music in history!.)

Given that the Classical Era in music began with the influence of Bach, and encompassed the music of Haydn, Mozart, and (early) Beethoven, it is hard not to see that era as a musical high point!. And it is just as easy to see why the music known as "classical" is considered to be a musical high point compared with most of the pop offerings by today's artists!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Because Johann Sebastian Bach was a Baroque composer, not a classicist (one of his kids was), and Chopin was a romanticist!.
Long story short, read this:http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Classical_m!.!.!.
REAL classical music is a period before romanticism and impressionism, etc!.; however, most people are wildly undereducated to know that and they call "classical" everything before the 20th century or even later that has a cello or a violin in it LOL But for educated people that doesn't count!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The kind of music that about 1/5 of the questions on Yahoo! Answers Classical section pertain to!.

for the follow on question: Bach is from the Baroque period, and Chopin is from the Romantic period !.!.!. for all intents and purposes both fall into the plebeian definition of Classical music!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
