Spinto Soprano- what does it mean?!

Question: Spinto Soprano- what does it mean!?
Hi, I was just wondering, what is the exact definition of a 'spinto soprano'!? What is Christina Aguilera and what is Mariah Carey!? Any video clips to help explain would be much appreciated (and definitely worth ten points)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

O dear, that is a very technical question about "live" singing!.

I will answer it for you!.

Unfortunately, your question about the pop singers will require that I also explain why opera and pop are very different, so I hope I do not offend you!.

Here goes!.!.!.!.

Spinto is an Italian word that means "pushed"!.

In the world of live theatre, a spinto soprano is a lyric soprano (i!.e!. a lighter voice) that is being "pushed" (i!.e!. forced) to make a more dramatic (i!.e!. louder and sometimes heavier) kind of sound!.

A spinto voice retains some of the beauty of a lighter, lyric soprano, but also can produce more sound when needed, and the "pushed" quality is very exciting!.

There is actually a "fach", or vocal category system of live theatre where the basic vocal divisions of soprano, tenor, bass, mezzo, etc are broken down further into subcatagories according to vocal weight and size!.

The role of Turandot will be sung by a dramatic soprano, and the role of Liu will be sung by a lyric soprano in the opera Turandot, for example!. Maria Callas, to my mind, is the very definition of a lyrico spinto voice!. She sings lightly but can also use a lot of edge!. Certain roles, like Tosca in the opera Tosca, are made for spinto voices!. (Callas and Tebaldi are famous for this role!.)

The wiki page below explains all this fully!. And there is a vocal example too!.

Now, you were asking about two pop singers!.

Pop singing is about style more than singing technique I am afraid!. I am an opera singer, but I sometimes sing lighter stuff with microphones, and if I want to sing pop, I sing differently!.

To show how stylized pop singing is, just listen to Carey sing the word "I"!. She never sings it like she would say "I", but rather "aahhh" as in the word cat!.

If you make a little study of how all modern pop singers speak their words very differently than they sing them (if they spoke the way they sing they would all sound like afro-American soul artists) then you will be well on the way to understanding the artificiality of modern pop singing!.

Part of this artificiality is that pop music is all sung with microphones, so the question of volume and projection is no longer relevant!. The quality and volume of sound is completely in the hands of the sound engineers!.!.They even have technology that corrects your pitch if you are out of tune, as you sing!.

The "punchy" sound that Carey gets on her high notes (which would be much too thin and weak to work in a live theatre setting) comes from something called "compression" that is added by the sound engineer!.

With all this technology, pop singers use a "microphone technique" as they sing which means they sing quietly enough that the microphone is not overloaded, or vary the distance from their mouth to the microphone for the same purpose!.

So, even if Carey were a genuine operatic spinto soprano, she would never use that technique when singing with a microphone anyway!. She would use a microphone technique!. (Apparently Carey's mom was an operatic soprano, so for all I know she may be able to sing acoustically as well)!.

Hope that is not too much information,

best wishes!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

"A spinto soprano (also lirico-spinto or "pushed lyric") is an operatic soprano that has the brightness and height of a lyric soprano, but can be "pushed" to dramatic climaxes without strain, and may have a somewhat darker timbre!."Www@Enter-QA@Com
