i think the basic timeline of music history progresses in this fashion:

chuck berry!.!.!.began the advancement and use of the guitar as a popular musical instrument in the mainstream

elvis presley!.!.!.became the first true rock and roll superstar

the rolling stones!.!.!.the first british band to gain and sustain over many years major success in the united states, and wrote the first popular "epic" song(going home from the aftermath album, it's about 11 and a half minutes)

the beatles!.!.!.the first band to reach the level of popularity that elvis achieved, and overall the most popular band in the history of the known universe

pink floyd!.!.!.became the first band to achieve major sustained success in the prog rock genre, and along with led zeppelin advanced the popularity of the "epic"

black sabbath/led zeppelin!.!.!.the "inventors" of metal, although some would argue zeppelin's inclusion in this part

elton john/billy joel!.!.!.became the first enormous successes using the piano as the primary instrument to create "rock and roll"

beastie boys!.!.!.became the first, and for many years the only, act to successfully combine rap and rock

metallica!.!.!.became the first true heavy metal band to achieve major success

michael jackson!.!.!.became possibly the best-selling artist of all time by starting the movement towards pop music

rem!.!.!.began the alternative/college rock movements by becoming popular amongst young people

nirvana!.!.!.ended the pop and hair metal crazes by jumpstarting the popularity of grunge

these are the bands/artists that i feel have had the greatest impact on music, either by popularizing a genre of music or breaking ground on something that would affect music for years in the futureWww@Enter-QA@Com

Well for sure Black Sabbath!. They played a huge role in the creation on heavy metal music!.

Nirvana started a new type of rock genre and they shifted the focus of record companied from glam metal to a more down to earth type of rock!.

Run D!.M!.C- They were the first rap artist to make an impact on MTV and the radio!. They started to bring rap to the masses!. Plus they helped to bring back Aerosmith!.

Def Leppard was great, all the drama that happened, Rick Allen losing his left arm, Pete Willis getting kicked out for drinking during a show, Steve Clark dying of drinking to much :( , Phil Collen joining Leppard, and Vivian Campell joining Leppard!.
