but they're right about the mute being inserted on the bridge
however, the main purpose of the mute is to reduce the sound of the violin!. the mute takes the form of a device attached to the bridge of the instrument, dampening vibrations and resulting in a "softer" sound!.
i have a mute at home and i attach it to the bridge in my violin only if i would be practicing so i would not disturb my neighbors!.!.

Not sure what you mean!. There are three possibilities, none of which make the violin sound better!. The first is a dampit, which is a kind of green snake-like tube that goes in the F-hole and keeps the violin from drying out; the second is a pickup, which can be used to amplify the violin; and the third is a mute, which attaches to the strings!.
