Geek Rock (also known as nerd rock, but distinguishable from the hip hop genre Nerdcore) is a musical subgenre of alternative rock, although unlike many genres, the term is somewhat loosely applied as far as the style of music performed is concerned!. Rather, the phrase is more often used to describe the artists and performers, whose personalities and/or appearance are considered "geeky" or "nerdy"!.
However, there are certain common musical traits that many geek rock artists share, although a good number of the bands described as such may display a sound far removed from the considered standard!. Such elements include heavy use of synthesisers and electronic keyboards, vocoders, harmonic vocals (and, sometimes, extensive use of female-led backing vocals) and idiosyncratic use of instruments not usually associated with alt-rock, such as accordions!. Instead of music presented by teen idols like Fabian, or David Cassidy, or John Mellencamp, or Springsteen, or Bon Jovi, where the sex appeal of the singer is very much in evidence, the geek rock movement is kind of an anti-teen idol movement, where the rock guitar heroes are "just like us", geeks without lives who can still make music that we can relate to, 'cause they're real people, just like us!. I believe that is the conceit!.
I think it's a little disingenuous now, a lot of it looks like a pose to me!. Just another uniform or conformity!. Sooner or later, that happens to any new trend!. It has happened to the geeks!.
I think Elvis Costello was the first successful self-consciously geek rocker!. Look at him on that My Aim Is True album - there is nothing geekier!. And that was about fifteen years before Weezer!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
