MAN-O-WAR BABY!.!.!.!.REPRESENTS THE BEST!.!.!.AND!.!.WORST!.!.!.!. IN METALWww@Enter-QA@Com

Mike's right!. I'm going to have to say Sabbath, since they DID pretty much invent true metal!.

Tony Lommi was the first to start tuning in C, and Butler followed suit to match by actually detunning his bass, and was the first ever to!. This formed a whole new sound, thus birthing metal into what we know today!.

also, Rob Halford, singer for Judas Priest, when filling in for Ozzy Osbourne at a show in Philadelphia, introduced Tony Iommi to the audience as "The man who invented the heavy metal riff"!.

It doesn't get much more pure than Black Sabbath!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

How far back to you want to go!? Honestly, Johann Sebastian Bach was basically just metal for the 18th century!. Don't believe me!? Listen to the toccatta and fugue in D minor!. Heavy and creepy!. After Bach there was Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky and his Night on Bald Mountain!. He was metal for the 19th century!.

Metal is not pure!. It, like all music, is a combination of elements from all that came before!. While I consider some bands "more metal" than others, I don't think there's even such a thing as *pure* metal!.

Need to go with Sabbath (the Ozzy years)!. They were the godfathers of metal so I think they are "the purest" by definition!.

Simple and unrefined!. I heard they just jammed for days and took the best stuff and just spliced it together for the first 2 or 3 albums!. (Don't know how true that is, but!.!.!.)Www@Enter-QA@Com
