Actually they initially started as two, June & Bonnie started as
"Pointers, a Pair"!. (in 69)
Anita and Ruth joined the two in '72 (pointer sisters) and Bonnie left the group in '77 to pursue her solo career!.
(do you recall her song "heaven must have sent you"!?) 1978
I loved that song by the way!. lol!.
It's really sad that around June's death, (2006) it seems like the other 2 sisters were estranged from Bonnie!. They didn't allow her to rejoin the group!.
