It's the same thing with a store like Home Depot!.!.!. when you pay minimum wage (or very little more than that) you can't exactly be expecting to hire experts in the field!.
The sad truth is that when you are in that situation you may have some previous experience with an instrument, but you won't know most of your customers questions - you will be lead towards guessing and suggesting products that may or may not meet a customer's needs!.
A lot of these kids learn everything they know from their customers!.!.!. I know that's the way it was when I worked at Home Depot!. No one really knew much if they were under the age of, say, 30!.!.!.!. so every time you found a customer that knew what they were talking about, you chat 'em up and try and get some information out of them for future use!.
That's how I survived the plumbing department!. =)
I recognized this when the local Guitar Center hired some girls!. Great business tactic - their business improved - but one or two of them didn't know jack!. The last time I went in to find some power tubes I did her the courtesy of not just asking if they had an 12at7 tube, but why I was asking (replace the reverb driver in my Mesa Boogie, seeing if there were any I could put in the preamp!.!.!.!. no, for my amp it's not all that advisable!.!.!.)!.
She appreciated it!. It's not like they give you much more than a crash course on this stuff!.!.!.
