Soul in the voice, what a great way of describing it! I assume you are asking about interpretation, how to put your feelings in a song and communicate them to an audience!.
In my humble opinion I do the following:
1!. Know the background of the song, composer, style, why the composer wrote it, what the words mean, is it dedicated to someone in special!? Is it part of a collection of songs or comes from a Broadway show or from an opera!? If so, where in the opera or Broadway song appears!? which is the character that sings it!? why!?, etc!.!.!.I know all of these might seem too technical to think about it but gives you more means for your interpretation, once you have digged all you can about the song then:
2!. Add my own emotions that come from my experiences, can I relate to the song!? if so, is it a happy, sad, etc!.!.!.experiences!. This is the personal print or touch for the song, the way I will communicate all those emotions I know I can use for the right style of music I am singing!.
