Is it somewhat common to use a coated drum head as the batter head but a clear d!

Question: Is it somewhat common to use a coated drum head as the batter head but a clear drum head as the resonant head!?
I'm just experimenting with different drum heads and I'm just not sure if drummers use coated as a batter head, but clear as a resonant head!. I'm not sure if it would cause a bad sound!. also, I know that being coated gives the head a more "warm" tone, but I'm not positive what that means!. If you can explain that, that would be awesome!. By the way, I play rock/punk/alternative type music!. Thanks!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

To be quite honest, I have found that it doesn't really matter whether or not the bottom head (for your toms specifically) is coated or uncoated!. I have found that what makes the difference is "how you tune them"!. I play a Yahama Recording Custom drum kit and I tend to favor Remo Pin Stripes or Ambassadors on the top and thinner clear ones on the bottom!. However, during individual tom tuning, I tune the top heads a bit lower than the bottom heads because I like a deeper sound without tons of overtone ringing!.

Now if we were talking about a bottom snare head then you must have the very thin bottom head (always a clear one) in order to remain truly responsive to the snares at the bottom!.

Coated heads offer a very slighly dampened sound/"warm" tone(or you could say the sound is not as sharp) as a clear head!. However, these days they have a combination of factors that produce all kinds of effects: Double ply drum heads with a thin oil layer (Evans brand)!.!.!.I like that for the snare!. It can be a little muddy sounding compared to a clear or coated head but once you put it on it's really good to go!.!.!.no real "break in" period per se!. In Jazz drumming, having a coated head is almost always essential especially if you are doing some brush work on the snare!. You can't really produce the same effect on a clear head!. The coating acts as the "gravel/sandy" sound of brushwork!.

Keep on drumming! -KarenWww@Enter-QA@Com

In my experience, clear heads seem to have more of a *bong* sound to them unless you use something to dampen them!. I think coated heads sound better!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
