What is the difference between Rock and Alternative?!

The term "alternative" in rock music has been blurred so much over the past fifteen years, that it's virtually meaningless!.
Alternative music came out of the little known bands that were played on college stations back in the 1980s!. These bands were influenced from everyone from David Bowie, The Velvet Underground to MC5, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, and early punk!. They were the "alternative" because they were different from the normal AOR rock that had dominated mainstream radio!. Not only that, but little people knew about these bands, and it made the college rock fan feel as if they were part of an exclusive club!.
Recently though, "alternative" has meant any band that has been marketed that way!. The alternative bands of the past never were marketed, and that's what made them who they were!. If you look through a BMG catalog, and a band is listed under "alternative", chances are!.!.!. they aren't!.
Basically, alternative used to mean the same thing as "indie", although I'm afraid that the term "indie" is set to be hijacked by the same Moguls and marketing that "alternative" was wrecked by!.

To me plain old Rock'n Roll is always somewhat Blues based!. Even if the song is very different than a Blues song there will be some hint of the Blues in the lyrics or cords or whatever!. Alternative seems like it usually has a different musical influence and sound and is not as tied to the traditional Blues/Rock sound!. Examples: White Strips (Rock), The Shins (Alternative)!.
There is a lot of Bands that have songs that could be in both genres and other genres like Rock/Country, Rock and Soul, Punk Rock, etc!. Then you have to go by the bulk of their work!. A lot of great bands could fall into multiple categories!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I would say that it has a lot to do with the lyrics and type of guitar riffs used!. They both have similar song structures, i!.e!. intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc!. Alternative lyrics tend to be more about self expression, problems, and situations!. I find that Rock music is all about a good time, good energy, and fun!. Just my opinion though!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Rock is a general classification, alternative is a sub-genre of rock, like rock'n'roll or progressive or hard rock!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
