Answers:
If you have a computer, you can do it pretty cheap!.

The mic's are the most expensive part, but don't skimp on them!.!.!. I strongly recommend Shure SM-57 for instruments and Shure SM-58 for vocals!. 100$ ea!.

Get a 4-track mixer!. I've used a 4-track Behringer mixer, costs less than 150$!. You don't need more than that!.

Get a USB audio interface!. Around 100$!. Make sure it has two line in's so you can record stereo from the mixer!. A better option would be to get a higher quality soundcard!.!.!.!. that will run at least 200-300 dollars!. You will get higher quality results!.!.!.!. I've used the M-Audio brand!.

Get some cheap or free recording software!. I use Reaper, link below!.

You'll need a few cables and whatnot!. Some good studio-quality headphones are a must, and to get the best quality results from mixing you need to be able to hook a decent stereo system to the computer!.!.!. it needs to be flat, though, not a home entertainment system!. You can use headphones to get close, but make sure to check your mix in at least three other places - a boombox, a car stereo, and a home stereo!. If your mix sounds good in all three places, then you've got a good mix!.

To get the best results from as little as possible, you want to record a scratch track of the basic outline of a song, then go through and re-record each instrument separately, while monitoring through the headphones!.

Yes, it's a PITA, but it is the single best way to get the highest quality results when you're spending this little on audio equipment!.

I have used a four-track recorder (ie, four mics) to get acceptable results when recording live!.!.!. half of it is being in a decent room (few standing waves, good insulation), and half of it is putting the mics in the magic places!. You have to hunt to find those magic places, but that is one way to do it!.

I prefer greatly to record instrument by instrument, now!. It means absolutely no bleed from track to track, which gives me total control over the results!.

For even higher quality results, record using multiple (different) mics at the same time!.!.!.!. I've gotten superb results using a condenser mic and a dynamic mic at the same time, and this is where having a mixer comes in handy!.!.!. it gives you phantom power to do that kind've thing if you want to!.

what you need is a garage first!. then you will need recording eqipment!. go to sam ash , or guitar center!. you can buy a 8 track recorder for $600!. i know its expensive, but i have one and its great!. i saved so much money not going to a studio!. there are other recorders out there , 4 track will cost you $300, now that is the cheapest your gonna get!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Garage Band + Mics!. If you are planning on recording drums, you'd need at least five mics, which, at a normal price would cost you 450-500 dollars!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
