What I suggest is finding a band that you really like and then branching off from there and finding similar artists!. Seeing as you're into rap music and hip-hop, I would suggest trying some rapcore and metal to get you started!. My best advice would be Rage Against the Machine; they've got some great music with charged lyrics!. Plus, growing an appreciation for metal is important!. It opens up a ton of different bands and styles!.

Keep in mind, these are just a few suggestions!. A lot of these are classic rock, and some are fairly new, but the above CDs are definitely not the end all be all of rock music!. Your interest in different rock genres might adjust according to your taste!. I would advise looking up some of these artists and figuring out what suits your taste!. You can contact me if you want more advice on music if you wish!.

As for a website profiling rock music, I would check out Rolling Stone magazine's website, or even Blender!.com; they update about twice a month and put up lots of rock reviews and download suggestions for songs!. I don't always agree with RS or Blender, but I would definitely advise checking out their "Top 500" lists of classic albums and songs; they're a pretty good starting point if you're looking to really get into collecting or downloading CDs!. If you really want to be scientific about it, try Metacritic for reviews on all kinds of CDs, rock, rap and everything!.

There are also plenty of websites which profile specific genres of rock music!. For example, for alternative rock, websites like Alternative Press are a good source, and for some decent punk reviews, try Absolute Punk!. Again, if you'd like more suggestions, I'd be more than happy to help!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

note: even though the website above has the word 'punk' in it's name, most of the bands on that site are NOT actually punk!.

I grew up with hip-hop too!. Then I started listening to only pop-punk bands like Fall Out Boy!. And then I realized that most pop-punk bands sound the same so I started listening to a bunch of different genres such as metal (Metallica), punk (Dead Kennedys), electronic/synth-pop (Blaqk Audio), and oldies (The Who)!.

edit: I agree with the guitar hero advice!. I have a friend who used to listen to only hip-hop but she now loves a whole bunch of rock bands!.

I would also ask people in the rap and hip-hop section if they listen to any rock and what they're favorite bands are!. It makes sense!. If you like the same genre as them, you might like some of the same bands as them!. I asked a question like that in the r/h section and a few had Bad Brains (hardcore punk), Nine Inch Nails (Industrial), and Linkin Park (I think they're alternative rock) in common!.

EDIT: Familiarize yourself with the song Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I must warn about the Guitar Hero thing: Don't start listening to only those songs!. It's great for discovering artists, but listen to lots of their stuff!.
Some great rock, punk, and metal bands you should really look into, and a song or two to get you started include:
Coheed & Cambria: Feathers, Justice In Murder
Deep Purple: Knocking At Your Back Door
Dream Theater: Under A Glass Moon
Eric Clapton: Cocaine, Tears In Heaven
Journey: Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), La Do Da
Nirvana: Lithium, All Apologies
Ozzy: Slow Down, No More Tears
Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb, Fearless
Queen: Ogre Battle, Fat Bottomed Girls
Rush: 2112
Styx: Suite Madame Blue, Miss America
Weezer: Buddy Holly

I tried to stay away from artists found on Guitar Hero as much as possible, but some I just had to put

And I'm glad to see we're winning one from rap, (and as long as people don't give sh!t answers like Fall Out Boy or Paramore) and one more for rock and roll!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well since you come from a rap-influenced background, try Rage Against The Machine!. It's like a cross between rock and rap that's gone horribly right!. Anthrax is a good choice too, they may be thrash metal but these guys like rap!. (listen to the song I'm The Man and you'll see what I mean)

And some of the Beastie Boys' earlier work is good too, when I first heard Fight For Your Right I thought they were a punk band!.
