It depends what you're making!. Different types of EDM require different equipment!. Some equipment may be optional for you!. The most basic setup includes simply a MIDI keyboard, an interfacing sound card to the computer like the Echo AudioFire or similar device, and a DAW (digital audio workstation) like Ableton, Cubase, or Sonar!. You might want to also get a sound editor like Sound Forge or WaveLab as well!. Once you have a DAW, you'll need VSTs, both instruments and effects!. These will deliver far superior performance compared to built in synths or FX in amateur programs like FruityLoops, Reason, or GarageBand!. A fast computer is desirable as well, but not essential!. Some productions take up quite a bit of CPU, but efficient production practices can keep that CPU meter down on a lower end computer!. Some of us build our own desktop computers to suit our production needs!. A laptop works fine as well!. You'll want something with good connectivity, particularly lots of USB ports (more that 4 is desirable, I have 5 and using all of them with a hub connected to one just to fit all of the devices) and a FireWire port (one is enough, you can daisy-chain FW devices)!. You could also get a hardware synthesizer like the Nord Lead or Virus, both of which can interface with your computer via your professional sound card!.

You will also probably need to get a copy of the Mixing Engineer's Handbook, which will guide you through mixing/equalizing/mastering!. It isn't necessary though as most of us do, in fact, figure out mixing ourselves (but it will expedite the process)!. This is perhaps 99% of the effort that goes into a EDM production at times!. Contrary to popular belief, producing EDM, be it trance, house, techno, etc is not easy!. It requires five things: talent, hard work, extensive knowledge, creativity, and an open mind to produce efficiently!. Mixing/equalizing and eventually mastering is what separates a rubbish (no offense to anyone intended) amateur track from a solid professional sounding track, and if you don't have that pro sound, you haven't truly produced an EDM track!. So don't skimp on the mixing!. Learn it and compare to professionally produced tracks by well known artists!. Producing one track could take months and no guarantees someone like me would give it their approval when it arrives on their desk for screening!. Finally, back up your files!. If you're using a notebook computer, get an external HD preferably on an eSATA port (you'll need fast data transfer speeds so you're DAW works smoothly when accessing it)!.

I tell this to every aspiring beginner: Producing EDM isn't for the faint at heart!. Even if you don't fit all of the five qualities I mentioned, all you really need is plenty of hard work to churn out a good production!. If you have the interest in producing, you'll find that amassing such great efforts won't feel so daunting!. I commend your willingness to delve into the world of EDM production and wish you best of luck!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
