You don't NEED pedal especially if your just starting out and I wouldn't recommend getting them unless you are going to be playing live or with a band or they will just be a worthless pile of metal lying on your floor!.
OK the #1 pedal is either the Distortion Pedal or the Wah-Wah pedal!. The distortion pedal is more essential because you can go from clean to distorted just by a tap of your foot!. The Wah-Wah is harder to use but a lot more fun!. I would go for a Crybaby Wah-Wah they have a lot better sound!. A Delay pedal is a lot of fun and really nice sounding and is another pedal that is popular but not used in a lot of songs so if your just getting a pedal just to play songs that uses pedals I wouldn't recommend a Delay pedal!.

also you don't want to go for cheap pedals because they either sound terrible, have limited features, or break!. also pedals go through 9Volts like they are nothing so i would suggest getting the adapters to go with them(it will save you a ton of money on batteries)!. If you don't get the adapter and you use batteries make sure you unplug all cords from the pedal; it wastes your power even if its not on!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I use two distortion pedals in sequence, and a chorus as a basic set up!.

Two distortion pedals set at medium distortion give a warmer, smoother distortion than one pedal set at maximum distortion (plus it give you two different levels of distortion to choose from)!.

I use the chorus to give the clean sound more width!.

flangers, delay and reverb are also great effects and a volume pedal is very useful!. Personally I don't like wah pedals, but I will occasionally use one to change the tone with my foot!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well a good overdrive like an Ibanez Tube screamer
A compressor/sustainer to give your clean tones balls and keep your dirtys tight, it basically squeezes your signal to let notes ring longer or inversely shorter, controls feedback
I like the BBE sonic maximizer its not technically a C/S but its really user friendly and does the job
A wah, phase shifter or flanger to color your hooks and leads, phase shift means panning your signal around your speakers, think of your sound 'ping ponging' between the four speakers in a half stackWww@Enter-QA@Com

i have 3 that i couldnt do without and 1 that i use every now and then!.

i have a vox wah-wah!. a boss super chorus!. and the electro-harmonix big muff!.

since one of my amps has delay and phaser i dont need those!.

the 1 i mentioned was my whammy pedal!. cool for alternative/experimental rock and art rock/no wave kinda stuff!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

well you just need a distortion pedal to switch it back and forth bettween the clean and the dirty!.

and as for the wah wah it is great to have if you don't wanna risk out tunning your strings with a whammy bar!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

a dunlap cry baby wahWww@Enter-QA@Com
