Question about diaphragmatic breathing...?!

Question: Question about diaphragmatic breathing!.!.!.!?
I'm confused about what your supposed to do with your ribcage when doing diaphragmatic breathing!? Ive heard your supposed to fill you lungs to the fullest while pushing out your stomach, making your ribcage go out to the side!. But then I've also heard lots of people say that your only supposed to push your stomach out!. Sorry if this doesn't make sense I didn't really know how to word it, but could anyone give me information on what exactly to do with your ribs, lungs and stomach to breath with your diaphragm!. BTW I want to learn how to do this in order to sing better!.!.!.thanks for reading :) !Www@Enter-QA@Com

Okay, you have it half right!. Don't think of it as "breathing from your lungs", as that will result in getting short breaths that aren't supported!. Try to think of it as taking a breath from your stomach!. Yes, obviously you can't get the air from all the way down there, but if you get that "feeling", the diaphragm will be in use!. It's not as if the stomach should be out looking as if you are pregnant, just enough to give you support!. also, thinking of not bringing up the shoulders will help you to focus on the breathing deeper!. Hopefully this clears it up a little bit!.

yes, you have the first half right!. Let your ribs expand out to the sides ( which is where they belong) and feel how the muscles around your waist, front and back, are expanding with the ribs!. Now the hard part: Learn to stay just like that for as long as you are singing!. It will feel like you continue to expand ( don't actively push out, that's too much force)!. Just try to maintain!.
Fun little practice exercises include lip trills ( where you blubber away while pretending to be a motor boat, or a lawn mower motor, etc) and pretending to blow p brand new balloons for the kids' birthday party!. Both of these exercises alert your awareness to the muscles around your waist, front and back!. These include the infamous abs ( there are three sets of them) as well as the broad muscles in your back!. another fun exercise ( which can be done without singing a note, like when you are standing in the check-out line or sitting on the bus) is to pretend that all these muscles build a trampoline, and that you can bounce your breath off it!. You'll be able to feel the pulse going on inside your body!. After a while, it will be visible to outsiders!.
Look up all you can about appogiare!. that's the Italian word for it from the old singing masters of the 17th century ( who invented opera)!. A better translation is breath support, rather than diaphragmatic breathing!. We use the diaphragm when we breathe for life everyday!. Knowing that we use the other muscles as well gives us the inside track for singing-for-breathing!. ( also easier to spell, huh!?)Www@Enter-QA@Com
