You know, there is no such thing as easy when it comes to the Ballades!. Besides their technical challenges the difficulty begins the moment you start phrasing the notes!. These are 4 of the hardest pieces to make music out off!. I have heard more disasterous performances of these pieces than I have heard successes!. Forget about the technical challenges, those in themselves are ridiculous but keeping the pieces together musically is so challenging!.

You first need to develop a reliable technique that allows you to access the notes of these pieces with ease!. I would learn as many of the Chopin Preludes, Mazurkas, and Nocturnes as possible so you are familiar with Chopin's harmonic language, melodic structures and technical demands before taking on a Ballade!. I would also advice you to study many of the etudes to develop good technique, also work on scales/chords/arppeggios and finger exercises!. You need physical chops but more importantly you need the all important cognitive ability to work your way through these pieces!.

Each one has its challenge and what I think is easy maybe hard for you and what you think is easy maybe hard for me! Whomever said #1 is easy has got to be kidding and #3 being the shortest is not easy either!. #2 having a simple opening melody surprisingly becomes hard once you turn the page and #4 challenges you from the first note!.

Having studied and performed all 4, I can clearly say that you cannot rank them from most difficult to easiest! Learn a bunch more of other Chopin pieces first!. Unless you have a lot of experience with his work the Ballades will get the better of you!. And, I'm not talking 1 nocturne, 1 Etude and 1 prelude!.!.!. I am suggesting 4 or 5 Nocturnes, 3 or 4 Etudes, as many of the preludes as possible, 10 or so Mazurkas!.!.!.!. then you are on your way to taking on one of the Ballades!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

None of them are easy, but the one that presents the fewest technical obstacles, at least for me, is #3 in Ab!. The chief difficulties will be towards the end, with the rocking octave passages coupled with the striding bass!.

The Black Key etude is good preparatory work for it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
