Ian Gillan never sang on the 'Jesus Christ Superstar' soundtrack!. Ian only sang the role of Jesus on the original 'rock opera' type album released in 1970!. That album was in turned used as the basis for the Broadway musical in 1971!.!.!.after that the film adaptation was released in 1973!. A soundtrack album was released the same year, and as in the film, Jesus was portrayed by Ted Neely!. Ian Gillan was offered the role in the film, but this never came to fruition because his demands were too high, coupled with the fact that Deep Purple's tour during the filming would have conflicted!.
There are two commonly known JCS albums!.!.!.the 1970 original with Ian Gillan, and the 1973 movie soundtrack without!. There were also more recent Australian cast, and London cast versions of the album released in the 90's as well!.
I guess it's easy to see why some people get the two first ones released in the 70's confused though!. Personally I never cared for the soundtrack, but consider the original album a masterpiece!.
The same sort of thing happened with The Who's 'Tommy', which was a 1969 'rock opera' album, made into a film in 1975 with a soundtrack to accompany it also!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
