Does being considered "classic rock" have more to do with the sound of!

Question: Does being considered "classic rock" have more to do with the sound of the music, or the time of the release!?
Basically, you could answer the question by answering this one!.!.!.when a "classic rock" artist, such as Tom Petty, puts out a new album, is it instantly "classic rock"!?

I mean, some classic rock stations play new stuff!.!.!.even Foo Fighters (not that I agree with that)

also, I don't think new Santana is classic rock!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
It's the time of the release because the classic rock period is from '65 to '91 (Nirvana ruined all the good music)!. As well most of the classic rock does have a distinctive sound with more focus on guitar work and good lyrics and weird effects (Prog Rock and talkbox)Www@Enter-QA@Com

I believe it's more due to the type of music that was largely played on FM radio stations, which consisted of extended length versions of songs played on AM stations or album cuts!. Many of the artists never had many hit singles but they became very popular because of the sales of their albums and how often they were played on these stations!. It used to be that in order to be successful, an artist had to have hit singles!. Now, they could become successful through other means!. Groups like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd never would have become popular if they had had to rely on hit singles alone!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

classic rock is equivalent with the time of the release!.!.!.however, when a classic rock artist releases something new, i would still classify it as classic rock even though it is new as long as it fits into the artist's catalog(ex!. the rolling stones attempting disco is not classic rock, it's rubbish)

and you're right, new santana is not classic rock!.!.!.new santana is a collaboration band, although i am ashamed to admit that i do like smooth with rob thomas on the lead vocal(even though i despise matchbox 20 for the most part)

bonus:
first classic rock band- the animals, i agree
last classic rock band- tom petty and the heartbreakers!.!.!.they never changed sound even as popular music changed and they were still popularWww@Enter-QA@Com

I guess it has more to do with how long ago the band started its career!. For instance, AC/DC started in the 70s, and all the classic rock stations in my area play them a lot!. When they released Stiff Upper Lip, the classic rock stations started playing tracks from that album, even though it was new!. So yes, if Tom Petty put out a new album, I guess it would still be classic rock!. The same probably applies to the new album that the Eagles released a few months ago!.

On a side note, I wanted to scream when I heard Nirvana on one of these classic rock stations!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well by saying 'time period' your saying that any record that came out that year is classic!? So Leif Garret is classic rock!?
I think it's the music, obviously you cant call a new release 'classic' right off the bat, but it doesn't have to be old to be considered 'classic'
the Black Crows are a good exampleWww@Enter-QA@Com

I think its about the time period!. There was a certain sound that people were going for back in the day and many bands tried to match it while also trying to provide something new!.

So In other words, the time period affects the sound!.!.!.

This made me think very hard!. (Star for you)Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think "Classic Rock" has everything to do with the band and when they became famous!. From there, once they are considered a "classic rock artist" everything they release is considered classic rock!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I guess classic rock is just a rock song that seems to stand the test of time, with new stuff not yet having lasted!.

I think classic rock radio stations play new stuff otherwise they would stagnate and get utterly boringWww@Enter-QA@Com

It has to do with the time period!. Classic Rock is considered music from the 60's-70's!. Classic Rock also has a different sound than the current rock music!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I definitly have to agree with Silver Rose Fox because Disco started in the 80's!. 60-79 were definitly the classic rock years!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

it has to do with the time period!. a lot of radio stations are all like "classic rock to new rock" or whatever!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Time period!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i think its time period

i mean, they didnt call it "classic rock" when it first came outWww@Enter-QA@Com

My personal definition {and I have seen at least a few people here agree with me!} is :~

'Classic Rock' refers to bands and artists who originated between 1960 - 1979!.

So, it is the origin of the band / artist which determines the genre, not the release date of albums, or the 'sound' of the music {Fairport Convention is as much Classic Rock as Led Zeppelin is!.!.!.}

And, something which sort of ties-in with this :

I can no longer see this Q I answered last night, as the asker has blocked me, but :
Asked by LEDZEP69 : "For all you 70's & 80's Classic Rockers out there !!!!!!!!?"

If you can see my answer, you will understand why I received this message :
"Subject: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!?
