I did a bit of research on this band when I was looking for bands similar to Dillinger Escape Plan!.

This is not screamo, but they play a genre that is called, get ready, MATH ROCK!. Yes, MATH ROCK!. No, not School House Rock, but MATH ROCK!. Turns out the Dillinger Escape Plan is one of the bands who either started this genre or made it very popular!. Math Rock, from what I remember, comes from Hardcore/Punk roots as does Emo/Screamo!.

This is not a screamo band however!. What makes bands like this different from other bands who come from Hardcore/Punk backgrounds is that they mess around with the Time Signature!.

I forgot how the time signature concept works as it has been a long time since I took that Music Theory class at the local community college, but what's important is that modern music plays a lot of songs in the 4/4 Time Signature!. It's easy to recognize this because every rock song plays at this Time Signature!. A simple way of putting it is by "counting the beats" to a song (it could be pop, rock, hip-hop) and you will always find yourself counting smoothly by four--1, 2, 3,4/1, 2, 3, 4!. Most modern music lives by this!. The only time you'll encounter something different is if you're listening to a waltz (then you're counting 1,2,3/1,2,3) or a marching band (1,2/1,2/1,2)!.

Well, early Dillinger Escape Plan, and The Number 12 play in different time signatures that go against the grain of modern rock music!. I dare you, DARE YOU, to count 1,2,3,4/1,2,3,4 to the music video without stumbling your count!. You can't do it! I'm surprised even in this 2007 song that they're still doing that wacky time signature scheme of theirs!. Even Dillinger Escape Plan, it said of them, have gone into a more popular 4/4 in their latest albums!.

The other characteristics of MATH ROCK is that they implement a lot of Jazz "sounds" into their music and the singer's voice is not there to sing or make melody or harmony, but to simply make noise (not surprising though, huh!?)!. So with these characteristics in mind, you can say that Math Rock can be the same or similar as Progressive, but I do not know if both of these genres are considered the same genre, but a different name or if they come from the same exact influences!.

A metal band that I have recently picked up on is Between the Buried and Me and to my surprise, they are considered a Progressive Metal Band and they too seem to mess around with Time Signatures, melodies, and the growling, screaming voice (although the lead singer, from time to time, will switch from growls to a melodic voice)!.

So I'm ready to go to bed and say that Math Rock is a form of Progressive Rock, but with Punk/Hardcore influences!. Again, this is not SCREAMO!. You want Screamo, go listen to Hawthorne Heights or A Static Lullaby (for both bands, go listen to their first albums!. How would I know!? No reason :p )

EDIT: There's some personal opinion based on facts :)
I thought you wanted to know what category of music you could put this band in!?

What I think of this band: I like them, I enjoy them, and been meaning to listen to more songs from them, but I think if I were to buy a CD from this genre, it would have to be a very old Dillinger Escape Plan CD!. Don't know which one yet!.
