Question: At what point did you recognize the likes of Jay-z, Nas, Scarface, etc!. as all-time greats!?
At what point in their careers, lets say album-wise, did you begin put guys like Jay-z, Nas, Scarface, Eminem, Outkast, etc!. in the conversation along all-time greats/fallen rappers ala Rakim, KRS One, Chuck D, Tupac, Big Daddy Kane, B!.I!.G!., etc!.

and on the flipside!. when will some of today artists be put on that same pedestalWww@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Really!.!.!.I have no idea!.!.!.this question takes real thought!.!.!.!.and I can't even begin to think on how i realized this!.!.!.I know Jay started at the top w/ me cuz he used to be my fav!. rapper!.!.!.but idk how I evetually decided to put Nas, Rakim, Biggie ahead of himWww@Enter-QA@Com

I think it's hard to say that there's one point in time that you realize that greats are greats!. For me it tends to be more of a matter of looking back over time, thinking about all the classic music that these artists have released and then realizing that they are truly greats!. At least that's the case for the current greats!.

It's a little different for some of the all-time greats that you mention!. Guys like Rakim, KRS and Kane were on top of the emceeing world when I first got into hip hop in the late 80s!. And as time passed, there was really no one who stepped up to prove themselves better than any of them, which magnified how great they really were in their own time!.

As far as today's artists, it's really hard to think of who will end up being remembered as an all-time great, especially if you bring in the comparisons to greats from the past!. There's such a segregation in modern hip hop that it is really hard to find a way to reconcile different eras!. A guy like Lupe Fiasco is routinely called one of the best rappers today but he would have been average or slightly above average in the golden era!. Most of the emcees who would have been able to carve out a place among the elite have been relegated to the underground: Aceylaone, Brother Ali, Gift of Gab, etc!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Jay-Z earned his spot when he dropped Reasonable Doubt!. Nas earned his spot when he dropped Illmatic, Face earned his spot while still in The Geto Boyz, I think either you're a legend or you're not!. Hip hop is different from every other genre because traditionally, artists that are on that other level usually show us on their FIRST album or first feature on someone else's album and build from there!. They become all time greats when other artists attempt to get there and over time they just don't measure up to the standards that's been set for classics!. Certain rappers always raise the bar, like when L!.O!.N!.S!. came out you just knew Busta Rhymes was waayyy different, even though Dinco D and CBrown were both hot!. That's when you realize that what the legends do cannot be duplicated or replaced!. Ever!.

Mimi - your posting privileges should be revoked for saying that KRS and Rakim are by far the worst ever!. You are definitely entitled to your opinion but the pioneers could never be the worst and certainly not for the reason you gave!. You must be listening to Lil Zane!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

When Nas put out I The purple tapes I started calling him a all time great, because I honestly thought he was gonna be part of the sophmore jinx, true illmatic was his best album it was written was not far behind!.

Outkast did it for me when they dropped aquemini!.

Scarface did it when he dropped the Diary lol, I knew he was gonna be a monster!.

Jay- I must say to me his album reasonable doubt was the best, streets is watching took a while to grow on me, Vol 2 was okay, I didnt like vol 3 too much, but the blueprint 1 was str8 heat, but still reasonable doubt put him in, I still bump 22 2's too this day lolWww@Enter-QA@Com

Can't say album wise, I'll say when they first hit me!.!.!.

Jay-Z!? When I heard "Dead Presidents"
Nas!? When I heard "Live At The BBQ" (Main Source featuring Nas, Fatal & Akinyele)
Scarface!? When I heard verses 1 and 3 of "Mind Playing Tricks On Me"
Eminem!? "My Name Is!.!.!."
Outkast!? "Rosa Parks" (couldn't vibe to that southern style before that at the time)!.
Rakim!? "Eric B!. Is President" (Eric B!. featuring Rakim)
KRS-ONE!? "Poetry" (Boogie Down Productions) (I couldn't vibe to battle raps like "South Bronx" & "The Bridge Is Over" because I didn't like his rap form or the production, later to find out the production was done and uncredited to one of my favorite producers at that time: Ced-Gee of Ultramagnetic MC's)!.
Chuck D!.!? "Rebel Without A Pause" (P!.E!. wasn't hitting me with "Yo! Bum Rush The Show" at first)!.
2Pac!? "Trapped"
Big Daddy Kane!? "Get Into It" (a song he first released with "Just Rhymin' With Biz" also on the 12" single)!.
Notorious B!.I!.G!.!? "Juicy" (a typical rags to riches rhyme, but I knew he'd blow up after that)!.

R!.I!.P!. Scott La Rock, Biggie & Pac and Rosa Parks (although she did not rhyme)!.

Honestly, I don't listen to today's rap to know who is still around and about!. I cannot answer your flipside except for the ones who have posted their retirements should shut up and retire already (like Scarface, Jay-Z, Master P!., oh, sorry you didn't mention him!.!.!.kewl)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think its hard to put all those names together, because over time hip hop, like all music genres has evolved!. I cannot imagine any of todays artists being put up with Rakims and Chuck D!.'s of the world because the styles are diffrent!. There are still artists like Black Thought of the Roots, Lupe Fiasco, and Common that represent some original hip hop ideals, but all time greats - no!. I just feel like if you stay relevant for a long time (like Nas and Jay) and keep making great albums you should be considered an all time great!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

This is a tough question!. Some became legends quicker than others!. And some had higher expectations, like Nas, for example, his debut album is one of the best of all times, and everyone expected him to be great, so he was held to higher standards!. These are my legends out of those you listed, and the albums that 'set them in stone' as legends:

Jay Z- "Hard knock life"!.!.tough one
Nas- "Stillmatic" [Everyone knew FOR A FACT after that]
Rakim- "Paid in full"
Chuck D [Public Enemy]- "It takes a nation of millions!.!.!."
Pac- either "Me against the worls" or "Eyez on me"
Biggie- "Life after death"Www@Enter-QA@Com

This question is kinda for the older heads if you think about it, but for me, I heard them(JayZ, Nas etc!.) before I heard any of the "all-time greats", besides B!.I!.G, and Pac!.!.!.I say, maybe a few years from now, when there's another generation discussing about RHH, thats when todays artist would be considered!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Jay-Z will NEVER be great, he can't rap for sh-t!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Funny thing is!.!.!.I wasnt always a big Jay fan like I am now!.!.!.i think 4 me this question is a little different!.!.!.Since I'm a writer I'm constantly looking 4 inspiration and ways 2 improve myself!.!.!.I bought Reasonable Doubt when it first came out soley off the radio friendly hits I heard!.!.!.and didnt pay much attention to the content in between!.!.!.!.It wasnt unitl Blueprint came out and I heard it!.!.!.that I felt the urge to switch up my style of writing!.!.!.!.at that point i went back to Reasonable Doubt and really got a feel for his evolution!.!.!.and he challanges me to think outside the box!.!.!.

As far as Nas!.!.!.I knew right off the bat he was something special!.!.!.Nas was actually my fav rapper at first!.!.!.!.When Nas came out i was living in Florida and no one knew who he was!.!.!.but His videos for One Love and World is mine used to come on the BOX (idk if yall remember that) and i was just addicted 2 his flow!.!.!.

Scarface!.!.!.i just recently got into him with "The Fix"!.!.!.!.i mean i liked his joint "i seen a man cry" but i was only like 13 when it came out so i wasnt that big into music!.!.!.

Eminem- I swore that boy was gonna be a phase!.!.!.i hated the SSLP!.!.!.!.he was too!.!.!.idk!.!.!.!.kinda acted like a clown in the "My name is" video so i didnt like him!.!.!.!.but when MMLP came out my mind changed

Outkast- I was hooked on them by ATLiens!.!.!.i just liked the fact that they was different!.!.!.so i knew they would be around!.!.!.

As far as today's artists!.!.!.!.i'd have to think about that!.!.!.me personally maybe cuz im about at least 7 years older than the average rhh section contributor !.!.!.i really aint feelin 2 many newer artists!.!.!.i would say the only newer artists that have come out that i really like is Kanye, Lupe, Jeezy, Ludacris, and T!.I!.!.!.!.!.and i cant really say that any of them will be hailed as all time greats cuz there is such a mixed opinion about them!.!.!.!.whereas the latter artists most like!.!.!.!.but if i had to pick from that list i would say Kanye would be remembered as more of all time producer as opposed to rapper!.!.!.i think lupe has potential but he supposed to be retiring already!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

it was steadily fed to me through pop culture media!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Legends in their own minds!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i havent i think they all suck
expert outkast i like themWww@Enter-QA@Com

i have no ides everyone has their own styleWww@Enter-QA@Com

First of all!.!.!. I don't really consider Rakim, KRS-1, Chuck D or Big Daddy Kane as rap GREATS!. I would call them pioneers!. But in my opinions, pioneers are nice because they pave the way, but they are by far the worst rappers because they were rapping when rap was just a baby and it wasn't fully developed/good yet!. I would say Tupac and Biggie are greats because they took that pioneer sound and made it into something tight and different, more like what recent rap has been!.

For Jay-Z, it was in the mid-90's when he was like the only rapper that you heard so much about like that!. Nas probably around the time that Illmatic came out!? Scarface was a great since his second or third solo album after the Geto Boys!.

I don't know what artists we have that can be put on that pedestal!. Most of our current rappers suck except for the ones you mentioned as greats (Jigga, Scarface, etc) however I would assume that Kanye and Wayne will go down in history (I don't really like either personally)!.

also!.!.!. I'm not Plies!. lol!. You can have credit for being creative with that one but I just use slang!. Most people on here can't say that word so it just stood out!.

**Lakim, don't be so sensitive!. I don't like them!. What's it to you!? They're style is not refined enough and when has the first ANYTHING ever been the best!? For example!. The first car!. That was not the best car ever made, in fact, it was one of the worst when you compare it to what cars can do today!. I personally think Rakim and Big Daddy Kane slum because of their swag, their rhymes and their voices!. That sounds like good enough reason to me!. Your posting privledges should be taken away for coming at me like that!.
PS - I don't even know a Lil Zane song off the top of my head!. Obviously you must listen to him if he's on your mind!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
