it really depends on your amp!. most guitar amps, even small practice amps, have a built in distortion capability!. The average small amp has 4-5 knobs on it labeled left to right!. gain, bass, mid, treble, volume!. so if your amp is similar try these settings
gain@8-10, bass@ 6-8, mid@ 2-5, treble@ 5-7, vol@2-3
If your amp does not have a gain or drive or distortion, etc!. knob than you may need a pedal!. Your best bet is to take your guitar and amp to your local store and try some inexpensive pedals out!. A basic distortion starts at about $40!.00 bucks (check out the behringer series of effects pedals, good quality at low prices)Www@Enter-QA@Com

If your trying to play stuff like rock or thrash or speed metal, then you should buy an amp which you are happy with the distortion!. Bring your guitar into guitar center and test out the different amps!. If you're playing stuff like Death or Gloom metal then you'll need a distortion pedal!. Pedal's do Get better distortion though!. Something else you might want to look at is a pod, you can play that through a stereo, computer speakers, etc!. etc!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Not really!. Any amp model can have a built-in distortion or overdrive channel!. Just gotta find a good brand =DWww@Enter-QA@Com
