That's very difficult to pin down!. I've been trying to answer that one myself for the past 30 years or so!. What I find is that the solo just has to sound and feel right!. Not much help, is it!? The problem is everyone's style is different, and getting it right involves a lot of trial and error, not to mention the fact that YOU need to like what your solo sounds like!. B!.B!. King and Joe Satriani have radically different styles, but I love 'em both!. Could you switch the two!? Probably not!. I guess the best way to develop a guitar solo is to figure out what feeling you're trying to evoke and go from there!. The big thing for me is it needs to sound musical and say something!. I don't like a lot of speed metal because the solos just sound like noise to me (Kirk Hammett is one notable exception to that rule), and there's something about the blues that I just like!. See how personal likes and dislikes affect how you feel about a guitar solo that sucks and one that is great!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

First it's all about feeling and heart as in the case of guitar solo's for songs like Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young and I Can See For Miles by The Who which are two examples of where the passion is so great that a one note solo actually does the job!. Once you have the feeling then I believe you should give structure to the solo!. Have a Beginning, Middle and End, so that your solo starts out subtle and builds to a climax!. A good solo should not be overly clean to the point that it feels sterile (Jimi Hendrix = Passion, Yngwie Malmsteen = Sterile)!. As long as you have feeling, raw passion and structure you'll do great!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

First off i think skill but even more importantly than that the amount of emotion you put into it and of course creativity what i mean by that is you could know all the guitar scales but they dont sound good untill you wist them up and put your own style into itWww@Enter-QA@Com

Melody melody melody!. Mindless shredding is dull, boring and overdone!. If the melody of the solo sticks in your head, or you can sing/hum it, it works!Www@Enter-QA@Com

using all four fingers

playing in at least 3 octave ranges

some "tricks" like whammies, wahs, and what-not's

use of "double-stops" or playing more than one note at a timeWww@Enter-QA@Com
