Personally, I think it depends on the type of person who's learning, and how they choose to learn!. I have a few friends who have learned the traditional way (lessons), and I think that it's safe to say they 'play piano' after five or six years, but that they play well (can learn a new song pretty quickly, know pretty much all the important theory) after eight!. But that's just one view on success!. For example, I started picking up[ piano on my own about two years ago, and I've been able to teach myself to play enough songs well enough that I tell people I play 'some' piano - some songs just as well as my friends who've been taught!.
So it really depends on what you consider 'playing', but I do know that you are qualified enough at piano to teach others after eight years, and also that professionals often take over a decade of piano - but again, it won't take nearly that long for you to be able to play many popular songs, especially if your teacher is lenient and lets you learn things you want to learn!. Good luck!Www@Enter-QA@Com

well i know its cliche but you never finish learning, and it all depends on your dexterity and perseverance, the most important thing is to find a way to learn that you find fun and easy to follow!. i could never stand learning old boring songs so i went and taught myself how to play songs i like using youtube videos!. by doing that combined with a little theory, learning scales, and practicing most days i could play proficiently within six months!. the important thing is to find a way of learning you wont get bored of!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Try to learn songs you know and want to play!. To be honest, playing well to any degree will be a slow process of a few months!. Try playing a few minutes a day rather than a lot once a week!. I'd try an easy starting method like Piano by Number at http://www!.pianoiseasy2!.com!. Don't get stuck with all those exercise pieces at first, or you'll get bored!. They have their place, but not at the beginning!. Play music you love, slowly!. Choosing a teacher is a very personal thing, find one you like or go on to the next until you find one you like!.

Hope this helps!.!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You'll never be done learning how to play piano, or any instrument!. That's part of the wonderful thing about studying music, in my opinion!.!.!.you can ALWAYS be better!.

If you've always wanted to learn how to play, I'm sure you'll pick up the basic stuff relatively quickly!. Just don't be impatient -- your teacher knows what s/he is doing, so trust her/him!Www@Enter-QA@Com
