I know of one band called Earth and Fire that started out as psychedelic/progressive rock and turned disco later on

KISS and Queen!. It didn't matter about KISS, as they freely admit it's all about making more money, but it broke my heart when Queen changed direction after I thought they were opening new doors in rock!.
