ignore all previous answers the solution is simple; your action is too high! The extra distance that the string must travel to reach the fingerboard is adding enough tension to make the strings go sharp when you fret a note!. That is why open strings are O!.K!. but fretted notes are sharp! Fixing this problem is dependant on different factors!. The first thing we need to know is WHY your action is too high!? There are basically three reasons!.
1!. your neck is warped!. This is something that can only be fixed by a qualified repair person that knows how to adjust a truss rod properly
2!. the nut is too tall!. Can be replaced or filed!. this is something better left to a qualified repair person
3!. the bridge is set too high!.
On an acoustic guitar this is the white piece of plastic that the strings sit on!. To adjust it you must remove it and file the bottom of it by setting it on a flat file and moving it back and forth over the file!. This is also best left to a repair person!.

On an electric guitar that has a stock gibson style bridge (non trem=no whammy bar) that consists of a tune-o-matic bridge and a seperate tail piece!. Use a flat head screwdriver and adjust the screws on either side of the bridge downward!.

For fender style stock tremolos make sure the springs are adjusted as tight as possible to pull the bridge firmly against the guitar!.

For floating tremolo units (floyd rose style) make sure that the springs are set tight enough to keep the bridge level when the strings are up to tension, adjust the overall height of the bridge with an allan wrench on either side of the bridge!.

If you do not feel confident enough to do any of this then let your local shop do it!.

The height of the strings depends on weather or not it is an acoustic or electric and any one of the things mentioned, or a combination thereof, may be the problemWww@Enter-QA@Com

It seems like its two different problems you have!. To understand what you're asking, you tune your low E string then when you play a G on your (tuned) E string its sharp !?

First thing you should try is to tune each string then put your finger under the string where the hole is and pull upwards!. This stretches the string and sets it in!. Tune the string after you do this!. Repeat this several times until the string is still in tune after you stretch it!.

If you still have the problem with a sharp G not on your E string it could be your guitar!. Either the neck or the frets may be off!.

But, if your only problem is just keeping your guitar in tune, then the first tip about stretching should do the trick!. GL, and keep it up!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Are you "assuming" it's out of tune because your electronic tuner "says" it's out of tune!.!.!.!.!?

Or do your "ears" tell you it's out of tune!?

I recommend never using electronic tuners!.!.!.learn the notes in your head until you can "hum them" accurately, and trust your ears!.!.!.

But it could be your string spool is too loose, so that the minute you press down on a fret, it goes out of tune!.!.!.or the neck on your guitar is warped slightly!.!.!.if that's the case!.!.!.new guitar time!.!.!.

Try tightening the screws on the string spooler!.!.!.real tight!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Are you trying to find the tuning of a fretted note!? Because if you push down too hard on a fret the note will go flat!. You gotta fret with just enough force!.

If it's your open string only, there are three common reasons!.

One, new strings!. New strings take a while to stretch out and stabilize!.

Two, new strings and you haven't bent them or stretched them out!. Even after days of playing new strings can be unstable!. You can help this by gently bending strings with your fingers!. Google it!.

Three, you've wound the strings improperly on the tuning peg!. There is actually a way to do it correctly!.!.!.!. and many people don't!. Google this one, too!. Might even be a Youtube of it!.

If it's not any of these, then you should take it to a guitar tech who can diagnose it from there!.

I suspect you are tightening strings one at a time!.

Loosen them all up, make sure the string is securely wound on the machine head and not slipping, and tighten all of them together half turn each at a time till they are all a bit deeper/slacker than the actual note!.

Then tune from deepest E to the little E!. Then re-check the tuning of E,A & D again!.

If your using a tuner, turn off ALL other electrical kit including fans, TVs and your computer!. They produce noise which disrupts tuning!.

Find a free guitar tuning program on download!.com and learn to do it by ear!.

Check the neck anyway!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You should probably bring your guitar in to a tech!. I repair guitars at a music store, and it sounds like you are having intonation problems!. You probably just need a good set up!. The neck needs to be adjusted!. Is it acoustic or electric!? Its really hard to say without looking at it, your neck could be broken, or if its a cheap guitar, you may never be able to fix this!. What brand of guitar is it!? Let me know, and Ill try to help!. cslayton83@yahoo!.comWww@Enter-QA@Com

You just said they are "brand new ernie balls" when strings are brand new, they don't stay in tune very well, the more you play, the faster you'll break them in, so sadly, you've gotta deal with them for a little bit, then it'll get betterWww@Enter-QA@Com

One of two things,

Old strings, replace them

Your tuning pegs are releasing tension and need to be replaced!.

Try strings first!.

EDIT: Stings new, then take it in and have the tuning pegs checked for holding tension!. It may be a inexpensive fix and save you a lot of grieflWww@Enter-QA@Com

check the neck and body for cracks or where the glue has broke down!. Check the keys to see if the gears are coming apart!. Check the bridge to see if it is coming off the body!.
If you can afford it, take it to a shop to be inspected, I suspect that something is borken!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It is most likely as Gtarczar said, the action, or the Intonation is off!. Either way, take it in if you don't know exactly what you're doing!.!.!.!.!.
