Vibrato???!

Question: Vibrato!?!?!?
How do you put a vibrato into your voice!?!?
One source says that you just move the pitch up and down really fast, but my friend says that she has a natural one, and moving the pitch is not the way to go!.
Can you develop a "natural" vibrato!? If so, how!?
If you don't have a natural vibrato, how do you make the note sound more musical!? I have good tone quality, but when I hold notes (esp!. high ones) for a long time, it just sounds really dull and boring to me!. I'm a soprano!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Vibrato is, or should be, a natural occurrence when you sing relaxed and unforced!. If you have too much of it, it could be one of several things, but it usually boils down to your breath support!. The key of being relaxed and unforced is singing with good breath support, from your diaphragm, not your throat!. If you do not have, it is not something to be frustrated over!. As your singing voice matures and you learn the proper techniques of singing, it will come, naturally!. To me, there is nothing worse than listening to someone who is forcing a vibrato!. If it does not come naturally, then it does more harm than good to the sound!.

The definition of Vibrato is "repeated fluctuation of pitch!." It is hard to explain exactly what it is without being able to demo the sound, but when you hear it, usually on a sustained note, there is just a small amount of trill, or vibration, in the sound, that is vibrato!. You will hear it a lot in classical or operatic singing, but for pop it is not necessarily something worth working for!. There are actually some forms of singing where the singers will work very hard to make sure there is no vibrato in their voice!.

The best way to work on your vibrato is to train yourself to breath correctly!. You want to create an even, steady stream of air in which you sing on top of!. The sound should spin freely and not be forced!. If you support your breath from you diaphragm while singing, and sing without the tension that comes with trying to force the sound, you will find that vibrato will become as naturally as talking!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I am not positive but I think that it is natural!. I started developing one around my senior year of high school!. Don't really remember doing anything different!. You could always try voice lessons!. They are usually fairly inexpensive!. The coach should at least be able to tell you if it were trained or natural occuring!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Just to add to what everyone else has said, since their advice is so well-planned:

Make sure your jaw or head does not bobble and shake when trying to produce vibrato or when actually producing it, since that is not the right way to produce or it is and is probably indicative of too much tension when singing happens!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Let's say you were singing the word "sing"

Instead of singing "siiiiiiing!"

Sing it like this "si-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-ing!" so you are singing a bunch of i's in a row, if that makes sense!. Do it really fast, but not so fast that it sounds like one i!. That's basically vibrato!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

natural vibrato happens when the vocal chords are totally relaxed, basically if you sing correctly it should just happenWww@Enter-QA@Com

Luna is correct!. Virbrato is a vibration in the voice which occurrs naturally when the vocal folds (voice box, vocal chords) are relaxed!.

I had a bit of trouble with it when I first started taking singing lessons!. I could get virbrato in choir just fine, but, particularly when I went into my upper register (high notes), I'd choke up and let out a horrible hoot LOL!.

Some folks have virbrato, and don't know it because you can NOT listen to youself without the aid of recording equipment!. You NEVER sound the same in your head when you're singing, as you do when you hear a recording of yourself!.

First, is someone else telling you that you have no virbrato!? OR, do YOU think you don't have enough!?

If you have a friend who sings well, see if she/he will sing WITH you to help you relax, and listen to you to help you do so!. also, record yourself, then listen to how you sound!. THAT RECORDING is how you sound to OTHERS!.

Lastly, remember that we are our own worst critics!. Don't let the lack of virbrato get you down, but NEVER NEVER force virbrato!!!!! It's better to hoot than to ruin your instrument!. There are styles of music where virbrato is not necessary, so don't worry so much about it, and let your voice be natural!. NEVER do anything that hurts! And most of all, have FUN!

first off vibrato is over rated!. so many medeocre singers out there hiding the fact that they're out of tune with the vibrato!.
it's often been said that the vibrato is the refuge of the mediocre singer!.

but back to your question!.
modulating the pitch is not vibrato!. that is called a trill which can also be useful!.
ideally the vibrato should come from the diafragme/ solar plexus!. but that's not enough!. this alone will give you a vibrato that sounds too operatic!.

all the same try this:
if you produce a tone and lightly hit the solar plexus you'll notice a sound rremeniscient of a vibrato!. you should try to reproduce the internal sensation!. you'll find that it's like a deep volume modulation rather than a tonal one!.
this gives you an operatic feal!.

now to cary on:
you should try to produce a series of "h" sounds almost like you're laughing!.
keep producing them in a constant manner and slowly diminishing the sound of air that produces the characteristic "h" sound!.
this is don by slowly internalizing it!. bringing the H further and further back until it feels like it's being produces in your chest!.
here's an attempt at showing it with letters:

simple tone:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!.!.!.

h:
HaHaHaHaHaHaHa!.!.!.
hahahahahahahah!.!.!.
(faster and faster)

internalized:
a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a !.!.!.
AaAaAaAaAaAaAa!.!.!.
(faster and faster)

start slow, then always accelerate!.

you'll find that you'll be able to make a melody while doing the vibrato!.

NOW! a word of warning:
don't exaggerated the vibrato!. (don't use it on every single note you produce!.) it becomes boring and monotonous!.

ideally you should save the vibrato for the ending of notes!. preferably long notes!.

i hope this was helpful!.
by the way i don't believe in natural vibrato!. it's just people who've been producing vibrato so long that they can't bring themselves to produce a constant tone!.
to sing properly you need to be able to produce MAINLY constant tones, with a little bit of vibrato!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
