Answers:
violas are bigger than violins but they are in the same familyWww@Enter-QA@Com

The violin and the viola are not the same!. They are part of the string family and many people mistake them for being the same!. The first noticable difference is the difference in open strings!. The violin is tuned E,A,D,G while the viola is tuned A,D,G,C (an octave above the cello)!. A 17" viola (full size) and a full size violin side by side will reveal another difference!. The viola is slightly larger, but this causes a lot of problems for violinists who switch over!. There's a lot more of a stretch!.

The biggest difference, for me, is the sound!. It's not as crisp and clear as that of the violin or cello!. But it does have a lovely sound, rather deep, melancholy and if the A string is played correctly, haunting (if its a beginner, it sounds kinda whiny)!. The reason for the difficulty in producing sound is that proportionate to the tuning of the strings, the viola should be LARGER!. But still, professionals manage to make them sound amazing!

The violin is assigned, most often to the melody, then a high counterpoint!. The viola is most often harmonic support!. It plays a huge role in chamber music literature!. Composers really began to give them juicy material, not just the violins!

HOpe that helped!.

The viola is a fifth lower than a violin, it is larger in size, and it reads off the viola/alto cleff as opposed to the treble cleff!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The viola sounds lower and darker than a violin because it is tuned lower and is a little larger!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
