You should know the names of the notes on the first two strings for sure!. Make sure you know the other two strings notes as well!.
Practice the style you want!. Basic rock or country - play the note with the chord!. Jazz or blues will be a bit more complex!.
You know how to play a power chord!? Those three notes one at a time can make a good bass riff for rock or country or some blues!.

Bass is just the bass notes of the guitar chords so instead of playing a whole chord you just play one note!.
