And Why!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

As a performer, I would almost always choose the Boston, although it's impossible to say for sure, because pianos are as tempramental as women, if not more so (sorry, ladies, that's not meant to be patronizing)!. That would depend on the individual pianos themselves!.

A grand piano has a distinct feel from uprights, just due to the way the action is set up!. A grand has a direct action-reaction between the keys and the hammers; the key goes down, hammers go up!. In an upright, the motion is transfered so that a key going down makes a hammer move horizontally, and some of the force is lost in the process!. You also have a much more resonant body in a grand, the soundboard and lid being laid out to project the sound!.

also, the Una Corda pedal (which shouldn't be called Una Corda as pertaining to uprights) works differently; on a grand, the key-hammer system is shifted to the left so that fewer strings are hit or one strings is hit with less force; in an upright, the hammers are simply moved closer to the strings!.

Most grands also have the nice (if rarely used) feature of a selective-sustain pedal (that mysterious middle one), which allows you to 'pedal' some notes while leaving others dampened!. On an upright, this pedal is given various functions such as a super-mute for quiet practising, or a partial-sustain for all notes!. I've not yet seen an upright with a selective-sustain pedal!.

Right now I have an Essex BG (yes, a step below Boston), but I decided on it over a Steinway upright because it gives the feel of a grand piano, if not the beautiful sound capabilities of a Steinway!. I guess it depends on if you want to perform on it (get the upright) or if you want to practise on it for a performance on a concert grand (get any sort of grand/baby grand you can lay hands on)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

well, it's not quite that simple!. Steinway has made several different models of uprights, and several different models of Boston baby grands!. which particular models did you want to compare!?

generally I'd expect the Boston baby grand to be better, though if it's one of the smaller models they can have a tinny sound because the string length gets short!. I prefer the sound of the Steinway k-52 upright and the old Vertigrands over some of the smaller baby grands!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

To me, a Steinway upright is a joke!. Grands are going to sound 10x better anyway!. Get the larger model!.

Bostons are also fine pianos!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
