How do you know if you "play" guitar?!
Question: How do you know if you "play" guitar!?
How many songs do you need to know before it's not premature to say you "play guitar"!?
Looking more for a cultural standard!. I know personally I can play star spangled banner, which is like the easiest song, but a song non the less!. But I still wouldn't feel comfortable saying the phrase to friends if they asked!.
Is it a time since you started practicing or a set # of songs!? Whats your opinion on this!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

I believe it's a matter of when you feel comfortable playing in front of others!. Some people believe that it is when you can play with others!.

When I plug my guitar into my mesa boogie and make it go "chug chug chug weeeeh", then pick up my acoustic and make it go "chuck pluck shimmer shimmer", and manage to somehow do it all while striking this amazingly bad ace guitar hero pose!.!.!.!.
That is how I know I play guitar!.
All that's missing are the groupies!. =)
In all seriousness, though, when someone can start playing a song and I can play along, even if i've never heard the song before, that's when I know I can play!. If I feel something, and I can make sounds that reflect that feeling, even if only a little, then I know I can play, even if only a little!.
You can't divorce emotion from music - I figure if you can create emotion from the music you play, then you can play!. Without emotion, there is no music, no matter how many notes you play, or how fast your fingers fly, or how much you paid for your equipment!.
It is good to practice a certain number of songs on a regular basis!. It is good to have a couple that you're very good at, rather than a bunch that you kinda suck at!. Even if you can play only one song really well, you can always say you play - you're just working on learning new material, but hey, you can do this one song really well so far!.
