To me, that would be Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath!.
I always thought of them as 'Original Heavy Metal', but I guess 'Classic' sounds better, and fits better with their peers in Classic Rock!.!.!.

Umm!.!.!. I always considered "Classic" Metal as just plain Heavy Metal bands like
Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, DiamondHead, Mercyful Fates and Ozzy!.
I guess I never thought of it as classic!.!.!. because I figured that their were still bands playing plain Metal!. Tough most "Plain" Metal gets labeled Power these days!.!.!. like Iced Earth and the Sword, which I really don't consider "Power", but others do!.!.!.!. they are way to "Classic" and early "Doomish" in their very heavy deliberate style!.!.!.which I really like)
And no!.!.Zeppelin (Hard Rock), Iron Butterfly(Prog Rock) and Def Leppard (Hard Rock) never qualified!. I still am torn as to whether Deep Purple or Blue Oyster Cult really fall under the Metal Aegis either (Deep is still more Hard Rock to me!.!.!.where Blue Oyster could fall between Hard and Prog)
I never considered TNWOBHM to be its own "Genre" so much as just a trend or movement, where the heavier, better types of Metal from Europe, especially Britain simply got attention , and gained prominence!.
I guess its why I'm not big on Genres!. Few groups really do us the favor of comfortably fitting in any one specific genre, especially through their whole career!. Hell!.!.!. is Maiden still classic, when they are producing albums to this day!?

To the person above me: Metallica isn't classic, it's thrash!. Same with Anthrax, Slayer, and Megadeth!. Def Leppard, Diamondhead, and Iron Maiden are NWOBHM bands, and Pantera is groove metal!. Just thought I'd clear that up for everyone!.

I think so!. What else would you call older stuff like Black Sabbath and early-Ozzy Osbourne!? I actually do use this term!. When people hear of 'metal' music these days they get the stereotypical image of a modern metal band!.!.!. screaming and heavy thrashing/grinding!.!.!. but that's not what I listen to!. Especially since people who listen to all this mainstream crap have no idea what true music is!. So yes, classic metal sounds good to me!.
Edit: I'd say all metal pre~1985 or so should be considered classic metal!. (just an estimate) And I agree, Led Zeppelin should definitely NOT be considered Classic Metal!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Classic Metal is Black Sabbath (with Ozzy), Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Dio, Rainbow, Diamondhead!.
And, to everyone, Led Zeppelin wasn't anywhere near metal!. They had bluegrass songs! They may have been genius, but not metal!. Hard Rock at best!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
