Two important features of #40 that I can recall off the top of my head:

1) One of the only two minor-key symphonies Mozart wrote
2) Mvt 1 does not begin with the main theme, but an accompaniment figure - very unusual for symphony/sonata form up to that point

I'm not sure if the minor key "represents" anything; Mozart scholars here will have to chime in on that exact point!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hmm!.!.

The only thing I can think of is that in the 6-week period in 1788 in which he wrote this, he also wrote two other symphonies, the 39th and the 41st, and hardly anything else!. His 6-month old daughter had recently died, perhaps coloring his thoughts at the time!. There were some other factors in his life at the time as well!.

The slow movement of the 41st also has some pathos in certain passages, which for Mozart is the exception rather than the rule!.

Interesting question!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
