Answers:
Apart from the amplified distortion, heavy metal relies less on the blues scale, with the lead lines focusing less on licks, and moving into lenghty solos (said solos incorporating a variety of techniques not usually found in hard rock, such as pinch harmonics)!. Harmonies are often chromatic, and the pentatonic scale is used a lot!.

Rhythm guitar is faster in metal, sometimes syncopated, and is often palm muted!. Power chords play a much larger part in metal too!. Tunings in metal varie more in metal too, with a fair few bands favouring drop e (half tone drop)!.

Drums are faster in metal, usually hovering around 180bpm, and the use of double bass is popular!.

And most obviously, metal is a lot more aggressive!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

hard rock is just that, rock music that is a bit more aggressive!. Heavy metal is already aggressive

(I didnt choose a death, black, etc band, because that is too obvious as to the difference between hard rock and metal, also ive always loved this band)Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hard rock and heavy metal are essentially the same ~ what changed was the decade!. In the seventies, hard rock was the terminology used to describe the loudest, hardest rock and roll!.

Then the movie and magazine, Heavy Metal came out, and Hard Rock simply became known by this newer, catchier name!.

This is asked often & my answer is always the same!.

Hard rock has an edge, but metal is far more extreme in volume, speed & lyrical content!. Hard rock never quite pushes that edge that metal does!.

hard rock examples: Black Stone Cherry, Thin Lizzy, Rush, Van Halen

Metal; Black Sabb, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, etcWww@Enter-QA@Com

Metal has more brute force

hard rock is basically nothing more than a more aggressive, faster form of what could be considered classic rock!.!.!.led zeppelin on steroids, if you will!.!.!.and the classic example of hard rock is ac/dc

heavy metal, on the other hand, is sort of an adjustment to hard rock, it takes on a rougher, less polished sort of sound!.!.!.also, the guitar tracking is usually faster, and heavier and darker in tone!.!.!.the obvious example here is metallica

and obviously, anyone can see the musical differences between ac/dc and metallicaWww@Enter-QA@Com
