For the 'Top 40 only' crowd, I would say that along with Vanilla Ice, you should also add MC Hammer and C+C Music Factory's Freedom Williams!. Rap honestly went 'mainstream' after the release of Run DMC/Aerosmith's Walk This Way, which at the top was the biggest selling rap single along with Tone Loc's Wild Thing!. Both those were cross-over hits that introduced rap to white people in the suburbs!. I would like to give prompts to Blondie's Rapture, which NEVER gets any credit for being one of THE most popular rap songs, 3rd only to 'Fantastic Voyage' & 8th Wonder!. Then came 'Rapture' which DID introduce rap to white people and was the first mainsteam rap hit!. 'Fantastic Voyage (hands down the best/classic) ushered in rap but was on an independent label and mostly only heard by african-americans and the occasional 'white' dj, such as myself!. I played FV religiously as I knew then, this was no more a fad that they said rock and roll was!. Whover 'they' are, they were wrong on both points! LOL! and Thank God they were!. Though I don't personally care for a whole lotta rap, as a dj I do appreciate it and only love it when it's innovated, instead of just tire borrowed beats!. But, alas, the beat goes on! Ehr, the bpms go on!!!! ;PWww@Enter-QA@Com

Did you ever here the song that Blondie did in 1981 called Rapture!? Pretty mainstream stuff don't you think!?!. Rapture is a rap song and the FIRST RAP SINGLE TO HIT #1 ON THE US BILLBOARD CHARTS!. That's right, some old white pop chick was the first big time rap star!. Unbelievable isn't it!?

Now now, wait just a minute!. I know what you're saying!. You're saying, hey, that can't be right!. But, yes it is!. As a matter of fact, if you would pick up a book once in a while, you might be in agreement instead of sitting there scratching your head!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

OMG!!!!!!!!
R U KIDDING!?!?!?
I ain't hating!.!.!.the fact of the matter is rap was mainstream for people like me who listened to it before it was reconized by MTV!. Besides, didn't he have like 2 popular songs!?

ice ice baby!?!? compare things like ice ice baby to the rap of today!. not the same!. at all!. its different, so it's its own version of rap that brought itself in to the main stream!. I'm not very educated in the world of rap but hey my opinion has been stated!.

EDIT: telsa hahah marky mark!. love it =pWww@Enter-QA@Com

I like vanilla ice cream, yes!. But I like strawberry better!. You're right, if vanilla ice cream wasn't brought to the mainstream then strawberry wouldn't have as much popularity today!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

People don't like him because he tried to act like someone he wasn't!. He was also a "fad!." People are quick to dislike fads once they're over with!. e!.i!. disco, rad pants, mullets, denim jackets!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Long before that white dude came along, the Beastie Boys was layin' down the rap, playin' it on MTV bringing it into the mainstream =]Www@Enter-QA@Com

He brought it to the mainstream, but he also made rap have more of a "pop" feel!. Vanilla Ice peaked early in career for being to poppyWww@Enter-QA@Com

You do have a good point about him bringing rap to the mainstream, but he also sang in an awful Nu Metal band!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
