I have a 1966 Fender Jazz, with a rosewood fingerboard!. I was really stupid and painted the body in the early 1970's!.
In hindsight I wish I hadn't been so silly!.
I also have a rare 1968 Fender Telecaster bass!. Fender only produced these for a few years starting in 1967, and through the 70's for awhile!. Thank God I never f*cked with that!
I would recommend leaving your bass stock!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't think it's a good idea to paint it!. Why exactly do you want to!? What do you have against the color!?
Anyways if you really want it a different color then just sell it and buy one in the color you want, or trade it in!. If you INSIST on having it painted make sure you have a professional do it, don't do it yourself!. You can really mess it up though, I really hope you don't decide to do this!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You should ask a luthier if he can recommend something!. I don't think it's a great idea to paint the neck--especially the fretboard!. If you do, it's probably going to take a good bit of work to strip off the existing finish and frets--then put it all back together!. Probably will make the tone suffer too!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
sand down the paint
apply a few coats of undercoat using undercoat spray paint
use nitrocellulose lacquer spray paint for the colour
do a few coats
apply a clear gloss lacquer to protect and give shineWww@Enter-QA@Com
