What are the criteria!? Popularity as gauged by album sales!? Then maybe he's pretty great!. I don't need to say that this is a crass and disrespectful way to measure artist achievement, do I!?
Raw lyrical skill!? Maybe he's OK!. He does that stutter-step stacatto thing way too often, and it's a crutch, sounds like to me!.
Speed of composition!? Apparently, the man can write songs and verses for an entire album within minutes, without ever picking up a pen!. This is what he is most famous for!.
Freestyling!? In spite of the above speed of composition, I ave never ever heard Jay-Z take anyone on in battle!. Please, somebody point me to it if he has done so!.
My judgment, on the basis of all the criteria above except the money one, is that Jay-Z is overrated!. I have always thought so, and I actually still kinda don't get why people think he's so fantastic!. He may be fast, but the final product (lyrically) is just "aiight!."
Think about people who you would never ask whether they are overrated: Rakim, KRS, other legends!. Then put Jay-Z next to them!. It's obvious that he's not one of the greatest!.
Even someone totally underrated like Posdnous from De La could outrap Jay-Z!. Then there's Bun B, who is acknowledged by those who think Jay-Z is one of the best to have outrapped him!.
