PLEASE HELP ME MAKE THIS CHOICE...It's a HUGE one...?!

Question: PLEASE HELP ME MAKE THIS CHOICE!.!.!.It's a HUGE one!.!.!.!?
I have a teacher right now and she's simply STU-NNING!. She dissects pieces, explains VERY clearly, is extremely active on her own, performs frequently, teaches at a university in Ontario, is a member of ORMTA, coaches at YAPA and a whole lotta other stuff!.

And I just found about another VERY tempting teacher!. This one I just found about has studied with Rosina Lhevinne and Stockhausen!. She has studied musicology at Sorbonne, teaches at York, and has got a fairly big discography!.

After I'm done my RCM Grade 10, I have the choice of continuing with my current teacher or going on with this new one I found out about!.

OG! She's Rosina Lhevinne's pupil!. That's BIG!

What would you do!?

Am I getting too emotional!? Should emotions get on my way to success!?

I asked my teacher a question that led to another one, and that is, "who's a good teacher!?"

She said many famous pianists weren't good teachers!. She personally asked if a Hamelin would give her lessons and he told her!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Who is your teacher!? Marietta Orlov!? Sure sounds like it!.!.!. or maybe its Virginia Weckstrom!.!.!. and I know you are referring to Christina Petrowska Quilico!.!.!.

Trust me!.!.!. I know who the teachers are across Canada!.!.!.!.

First of all it doesn't matter that someone studied with Lhevinne or Stockhausen!.!.!. So what!? So many great teachers were with great teachers! My teacher Solomon Mikowsky studied with Goronitsky but that is not why I went to study with him!. One of my other teachers Donn Alexander Feder was a student of Kabos but I didn't go to him either for that reason!.

Its not a big deal that she studied with Ms!. Lhevinne!.!.!.
She taught many other great pianists - John Browning, Van Cliburn, Martin Canin, Misha Dichter to name a few!.

You are basing everything on words!. Have you heard Quilico's students!? Have you heard them play!? Have you heard her perform!?

From what all your questions are - here is my truthful opinion to you!.!.!.!. You are a confused young musician!. Its great that you love classical music because you have a lot more passion than I did when I was your age!.!.!. however you need to get in control and not be so easily phased!.

You freaked out when you got a thumbs down, you are seeking a book on french /russian schools of playing!.!.!.!. listen!.!.!. learning how to interpret cannot be done through reading a book!. No book tells you how to shape a phrase - experience, a sensitive ear, understanding of theory, understanding of the composers style, and a thorough knowledge in history (not just music but all history - art, social, cultural, political) is how one learns to be a musician!.

No its not big that she studied with Lhevinne or even at Juilliard!. Do you know how many students have studied at Juilliard and become great teachers!? When I was applying for grad schools I read over the list of great teachers world wide - Sure Ronald Turinin who teaches at Western studied with Horowitz, so did Byron Janis who teaches at Manhattan School of Music!.!.!. big deal!.!.!.!. Turini is a great teacher!.!.!. Janis!? not so good!.!.!.

A great pianist doesn't always make a great teacher and a great teacher doesn't make a great pianist!.!.!. what makes a great teacher!? someone who understands how to explain the intricacies of music in as many possible ways to their students!.

The top teachers at Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard!? they aren't big name performers - they have careers but they are not out there like Kissin or Argerich!. How many students does Kissin have!? The answer is zero!.

Let me tell you this!.!.!. you need to relax and calm down!. Your head needs to focus on what your teacher is teaching you!. You seem to be the type of student that is easily influenced - both positively and negatively!. i don't know you but I can sumise certain things by your Q&A here!.!.!.

If you are with Orlov!? then you are in good hands!.!.!. she is one of the top teachers in Canada!.!.!.!. Quilico can't hold a candle to Orlov!.!.!. Orlov has ridiculous list of successful students of which I am quite close with many!.

And shopping for teachers!? not a good idea!.!.!. first you insult your current teacher and second you will always be looking for another teacher!. Third - your name will be out there faster than you know and not in a good way!.!.!. all the concert piainsts and major teachers in Canada are well connected to one another!.!.!.!. if you switch people know!.!.!. its that simple!.!.!.!. the elite in this country are well connected!. You don't have the choice of going to a new teacher because she hasn't accepted you!.!.!. how do you know she has availability to teach privately!?

What you need to do is stay steady with one teacher, it sounds like who you have is a great teacher!.!.!. Then, you should focus on learning everything you can from that teacher!. You do not switch because you read that the other teacher studied at Juilliard!.!.!. that is a ridiculous reason to switch!.!.!. you switch because you have exhausted your current teacher and cannot learn any more and if its Orlov, I highly doubt you are at that point!.!.!. you switch if you and you present teacher don't get along, you switch because you move to a new city!.!.!. never do you switch because you saw a teacher take lessons with someone great at a prestigious school!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Why don't you go slowly and rather ask the new teacher for just a couple master classes or so!.!.That way your old teacher won't mind, as all students regularly are supposed to look for these type of classes!.!.!.

Then you can continue with the old teacher if she is so good, and from now on, keep trying to attend master classes from different performers!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

what can each of these teachers teach you that the other one cant!? What do you want to learn!? Are you happy with the instructions and coaching you have received from your current teacher!? Have you asked yourself any of these questions, because you need to!. As a former music student, switching teachers can do nothing or everything for you!. Some teachers have better styles to your needs and are therefore better able to help you break though plateaus!. However, what works for one student doesn't work for all students!. You need to determine what kind of student you are and what you want out of your music education!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
