Question: So is heavy metal just a subgenre of rock!?
I think it should be its own genre, but from what I can tell, it's not widely regarded as that!.
I mean, even on places such as iTunes, where hundreds if not thousands of people must download metal songs, they're placed under Rock!.
So it would be:
Rock > Heavy Metal > Black Metal
!. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. !. Thrash metal
etc etc!. Is that right!? If so, then what would some other subgenres of rock be!? Alternative rock, blues rock, etc!? Am I understanding this correctly!? That seems odd!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No, it's a different genre that just got a lot of influences from rock, and that's where it originated from!.
"Heavy" metal is just another sub-genre of metal, like black metal and thrash metal!.
Stores and itunes probably place it under "rock" because they don't think it's popular or listened to enough to have its own section!. I think it's silly!. Although, most (decent) metal bands aren't widely known among the general public or are harder to find, so that's probably why!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't know!. If Rock hadn't been "founded" or whatever, metal probably wouldn't exist, but then again you can't really compare Elvis Presley to!.!.!.say Cannibal Corpse or Children of Bodom etc!.

I bring forth witness to actually being in place at the time!. Music never had "Genre", there were "Styles" of music!. Hard Rock was a form of rock , much as Metal was a form of Rock!. Now you have 100 "genres" of Metal , and 96% of it is pure untalented crap!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I think it is just a heavier form of rock!. Everything else just spawned from other forms of metal!. Death metal and Black metal I believe were spawned from Thrash and NWOBHM!. I'm probably wrong though!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
