Question: Orchestra Help!?
I'm going to try and score a 2 in 1 please help!.

1) Why don't the musicians ever smile while they play!?
2) Do the double bassists stand when they play or do they sit on stools!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Most orchestral double bass players sit on stools, because concerts are long!. Some jazz bass players stand!. Some sit!. It's up to the ensemble and conductor's preference!. They shouldn't block the rest of the group from being able to see the conductor, though!.

I don't understand what you mean by musicians don't smile when they play!. They have to form certain embouchures when they play and smiling would be the incorrect embouchure for every wind instrument!. The "old school" clarinet teachers used to teach the "smiling embouchure" but in time the clarinet embouchure with the "ooo" (French ooo) was found to have a much darker and rounder sound!. String players and percussionists are probably focusing on the music and following the conductor!. I bet if you were sitting in the audience and waved and smiled at a musician they would smile back!Www@Enter-QA@Com

1) I guess the musicians don't usually smile when they play because they're concentrating and focusing really deeply or maybe they're stressed out or worried!. Or maybe smiling would distract them or something!. I usually don't smile when I play because it doesn't feel natural to me!.!. and usually I forget to smile anyway!.!. Sometimes, if you watch carefully, they will smile, though!. Obviously, musicians who play woodwind and brass instruments wouldn't smile when they play!.
2) Double bassists can both stand and sit on stools when they play!. In most of the performances I've been to, they were sitting, probably because it'd be tiring to stand during a long concert!.

I hope this helps!Www@Enter-QA@Com

1!. Because they are concentrating!. The same reason why you don't see professional sport players smile during the game!. And so musicians do smile if they are really emotional and if the song they are playing is really happy!.

2!. They can do either, depends on the bassist!. Most of them sit on stools because standing the whole time for 3 hour rehersals really stinks!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well I played violin for 9 years and i have to disagree with the first question, there are some times when you smile!. I guess most of the time we don't because your concentrating on what your playing and feeling the music!. The times when you smile are either you made a mistake or maybe an inside joke with your stand partner!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm a trumpet player, which makes smiling problematic!. With string players, I assume they (like all musicians) are intensely focused most of the time!.

As far as the double bass, I'm pretty sure they always stand!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
