Do you find it fair that in this day and age...?!

Question: Do you find it fair that in this day and age!.!.!.!?
!.!.!. The people who perform a song are appreciated and famed more for their efforts than the people who composed the song!?

Contrary to even only 100 years ago, the composer was celebrated and well-known!. Nowadays all people seem to be able to remember is who *sang* the song, or which band plays it - even if it is a cover!.

Now most performers that I have in my CD collection, are credited with writing their own music/lyrics!. When the song in question *is* a cover, I find out whose it is originally and find myself a copy of the original!.

But then again, I'm not big into pop music!.

Although it only seems to be a thing among pop music, where the perfomer not only gets the most fame out of everyone who participated, but also the biggest cut in the earnings!.

Does that seem fair to you!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

hmmm!.!.!.

interesting question!.

please note, Aya, that doing a cover often is a sign of appreciation, either for the composer or for another interpret of a song!.
to do a cover, you have to ask the composer or the right-holder of a song (which may be a totally different person, or a heir of the writer), and that this rights-holder not only has to agree, but also gets paid for the licence!.
So the performing artist is not necessarily the one to get the biggest share in the cake!.

anyway, you're quite right that most people are rather interested in a certain performance than in the knowledge who wrote/composed a piece a music!.
On the other hand, there are people like you!.!.!.

personally, I'm interested in these things too, but that does not mean that I always prefer the original version to a cover!.
best example is "Kiss", written by Prince - but the best performance is by Tom Jones!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

People who write excellent songs are quite often ugly!.

To perform a song successfully the performer has to be attractive!. Pop music is an industry where appearance ( and image) is all- important!.

I mean, imagine if you had a performer who was beautiful and had a good voice, but they were only allowed to sing songs they wrote themselves!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I see what you are saying and it doesn't seem just that the lyricists don't get credit but that is the way it goes in that industry!.
I don't mind covers, I never appreciate them more than the originals but it does upset me when artists absolutely murder the tracks!. For instance artists that choose to cover Michael Jacksons songs and not once have I heard a decent version!. Of course there have been alot worse but that always sticks out in my mind!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No, but I recognize a large part of marketing music nowadays is image!. Pretty faces and hot music video friendly bodies are higher on the priority list that actual musical ability!. The image is the brand, so it makes the most money!. It's not fair, but it works in the current system!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No it's not fair, of course!. But mankind has always celebrated people in a crazy way - rarely anything to do with talent, often to do with looks, but mostly to do with money and influence!. Not fair and never has been!.

Mozart died in poverty, as I'm sure you know, and ever since people have built huge careers and fortunes performing his workWww@Enter-QA@Com

who says the composer wants the fame that the singer has!? They get paid well so its not like they are being jipped!. I also listen to singer/songwriters, but can appreciate a good singing voice when i hear one, despite knowing there is a man who wrote that song i am hearing on the radio!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The person singing and performing the song is the one that makes it either good or bad!. You can have an awesome song but a terrible singer singing it and nobody will buy it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

If the composer wants the fame then they should be the ones in the public eye performing it (as they often are)!. also I think you'll find that most of the royalties go to the composer,Www@Enter-QA@Com

ya it sucks as do all the crap pop acts that dont writr their own songsWww@Enter-QA@Com

of course not!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.but like everywhere else: sex sells !Www@Enter-QA@Com

Good question, I am a song writer and I take a lot of pride in writing, and like wise I always try to find out who actually wrote the songs that I like!.
I just wanted to add something after I read notecky's answer,
according to musicians, looks have nothing to do with it, I don't care what the performer looks like, can you imagine people going to see B!.B King and not digging it cause he is a 70 something year old man!. I can'tWww@Enter-QA@Com

Well I think that it is fair for singers to get more fame due to song hits!. They are the ones who convey and express what the composer/lyricist have created!. They become the face of the songs they sing, albeit not being the ones who composed or created the songs!. At least composers get recognition when their names are printed in album sleeves and another point to note, music awards celebrate efforts by both singers and composers!. I mean, if a song won an award, not only is it victory for the singer but also for the composer and the whole production team in fact!. Earnings-wise, I think it's rather unfair that the singer/performer get more!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think that in a commercial market as we are in today it is fair that the singing artist gets most of the fame as they are the face and voice of the song, and with out them the song would not sell, just think of all the other people who also don't get much of a look in, the marketers, the managers, artist of the cover, the sound technicians etc etc etc, all these backroom people, don't get the recognition they probably deserve!.

As for artist who cover other peoples songs, this has to be the highest form of acknowledgement that they originally had a fantastic song in the first place and increases the amount of royalty's received and in the case of yourself buying the original format, song sales!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think it would only be unfair if the singer tried to take credit for the song being "their's" and not giving the writer their due credit!. You have to realize that a song doesn't usually "get famous" until someone performs it!. You could paint the most beautiful artwork but if no one ever sees it, what would you expect!?

I usually don't even listen to lyrics in a song!. If I like the music or the sound of the singer's voice, that's what gets me to like it!. So as a rule, it doesn't even matter to me who composed the song!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I also do not listen to mainstream 'music!?', pop music and pop culture are all just products of the disposable society and like the fast food we buy it is usless crap!. Everyone wants a buck, everyone wants their 15minutes of fame!. How many disposable bands do we need!?, Sclub7, Bros, East17, to name afew that have evanesced into the aether!. It is quite funny that all the suckers complaining they don't have any cash, have usually spent it on disposable albums and singles they don't even like 1 week later!.
The ability to deceive and steal was developed as early in our evolution as the ape, you can see chimps today telling little white lies to each other so they get the fattest banana!.
Nothing is different in man, other than we plan our lies much better than chimps!.

I hear people singing songs that they think are modern music, some people don't know whether to **** or go blind when they find out a song is a cover of a song done by a band they hate!. Just goes to show how closed minded we can be to an experiance just because of how it first apears!.

But I have also heard performers saying how much better a cover is than their original song!.

In my opinion after 3 years all music should be free anyway, 3 years is long enough for anyone to make their cash from sales, and hey if they don't, their song could not have been very good anyway!.
After this time a fare assesment of what is popular can be assessed from download numbers, not from what the music industry dictates!.

Modern music has no soul or message other than spend all your money on disposable crap!. It is the parents providing the cash, and they are the ones complaining that their 5 year old is running around singing, 'if you want to be my lover', double standards and hypocrisy!.

Life is not fare, it never will be, but may be if we didn't buy the crap, the music industry wouldn't make it, supply and demand!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
