At first listen, this could be a fist-pumping cry for all the mouth-breathing, non-questioning folks who grew up voting for Ronald Reagan and tell us on a daily basis "America - Love it or Leave it" through their bumpersticker mentality!. My brother fought in Vietnam, and even though he came back in one piece, his mixed feelings toward what happened in the 60s and 70s in Vietnam are captured fairly well in the verses!. If you have ever heard Bruce perform the acoustic version, especially live, you hear that struggle between patriotism and self-doubt!. This song takes on new meaning when held up to current events!. Is it OK to not question the actions of our government!.!.!. or risk being labeled a traitor or worse, if you refuse to have blind-faith in our decisionmakers!?

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up

Born in the U!.S!.A!., I was born in the U!.S!.A!.
I was born in the U!.S!.A!., born in the U!.S!.A!.

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the U!.S!.A!.!.!.!.

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man said "Son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my V!.A!. man
He said "Son, don't you understand"

I had a brother at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone

He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go

Born in the U!.S!.A!., I was born in the U!.S!.A!.
Born in the U!.S!.A!., I'm a long gone Daddy in the U!.S!.A!.
Born in the U!.S!.A!., Born in the U!.S!.A!.
Born in the U!.S!.A!., I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U!.S!.A!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well!.!.!.!.

When Ronald Ray-gun used it as the theme song (without permission of course) for his campaign, Springsteen threatened a lawsuit if he didn't cease and desist!.

A cursory look at the lyrics makes it pretty clear that it is definitely not pro-American!. However, it isn't necessarily anti-American either!. Simply a descriptive narrative about one man's american experience!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Angst and frustration are appropriate adjectives describing the mood of that lyric!. Not anti-; but gee, there is really so much that can be improved upon in this place!. It is so often just left to the rich, their corporations, and their lobbying arms to determine what needs to be done!.
As I recall, lyrics suggest that, the results of trouble in our youth is often to try the military option!. And the all volunteer military needs just that sort of default thinking, right!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Pro USA working man/family

Slightly anti USA Government and big business!.!.!. well maybe not "anti" but critical of!.!.!. whilst recognising that the right to be critical of the government is a right in itself!.!.!. and is actually necessary for a strong democracy

But basically overall pro the "concept" of the USA!.!.!. whilst recognising that it not perfect!.!.!. but the best option there is!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's anti american policy with regard to the returning vietnam vets and the working man, the lyrics kinda say it all, try listening to the verses as well as the big chorus and you'll get it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Bruce Springsteen is the quintessential all-American guy and while his music may chide societal mores, he is never anti-American!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

its Anti-War, the song deals with the effects of the Vietnam War on Americans

people misinterpret it as patriotic but its notWww@Enter-QA@Com

They are to do with the 'viet cong' and the war and they are pro american!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
