Question: Can someone help me with different types of metal (music)!?
First: How are people able to tell if it's like Death Metal, Hardcore, Screamo, Metalcore, Speed Metal, Thrash, etc!.!? i just listen to it and call it "metal"
It's like, I asked people on UG some All That Remains songs that I should learn, and I called it death metal but apparently it's "metalcore"
How can you tell what it is!? I don't really like screamo though!. I like actual metal with good solos and guitar work!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

To the person above who said prog metal is crap!.!.!.i have some news!. Im sure u have no idea what prog metal is!.!.bcz if u do then u'll automatically feel the difference!. Prog metal/rock songs are progressive in nature; meaning there is a distinctive change in the style of music during the course of a song!. I cant explain that concept here!.!.it'll take a lot of space!. So if u dunno whats happening shut it!. Prog metal/rock is one of the most advanced n complex music (along with neo classical metal and death metal)
And coming to the classifications,
death metal has very technical guitar work, heavy n complex riffs (solos are not 'always' given utmost importance); and of course it has the famous death growl!.
Heavy metal
not as technically complex as death, but it sounds better to me!. no growls!.!.just high pitch ones!.( solos are a must)
Doom metal!.!.early black sabbath stuff ( gives u an eerie atmosphere)
Black metal
this is more of an experimentation metal!. extreme heavy metal subgenre!. it has high pitched electric guitars n played with tremolo picking, high pitched shrieking vocals, and lyrics are not conventional

Screamo is not metal, and usually if a band is in a sub-genre with "core" at the end, they probably aren't a true metal band!.

Thrash Metal - Began around 1982 with Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, etc!.
Black Metal - Began with Venom around 1981!.
Crossover - Hardcore punk and Thrash combination - SOD, MOD, DRI, Ludichrist
Speed Metal - Usually it's just the same as Thrash!.

if it sounds good i like it !.!. metalwise i prefer old dio, ozzy, maiden, etc
but the term "progressive metal" trips me out for bands like "Dream Theatre", "Spock's Beard", "Transatlantic", etc !.!.!. i wouldn't even consider that stuff any kind of metal !.!. it's more like electric stoner jazz
but some (say Paradox Heresy) has to be classified, like speed metal, because it's so different than say, "Obituary" , but kind of in the same realm

not being a huge expert but this is how i see it, hardcore being my fave is more low growls and break downs but still some lyrical sense (see eternal lord), screamo is alot lighter (see flood of red), thrash is fast all the way through no room for breakdowns( i dont listen to it) death metal is like hard core but the lyrics are a lot darker (see waking the cadaver) no idea what speed metal is but sounds like dragon force to me lol look up the bands on myspace but there are some definite differences from the high voices of dragon force and the awsomeness of eternal lord

It depends on a variety of factors, including lyrical themes, musical style, locational origin of the band, time (e!.g!. thrash in the 80s may sound similar to metalcore in the 00s), it isn't just the style of the music itself!.
