I am at grade 3 piano, how does one get up to grade 8!?!

Question: I am at grade 3 piano, how does one get up to grade 8!!?
It seems to take so long to learn even one piece of music, and I'm only at grade 3 - how long is it going to take to get to grade 8!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
The better you get, the quicker that you can learn a piece!. But the grades get more difficult as you progress!.
It is harder to move from grade 5 to grade 6 than it is to move from grade 1 to grade 2!.

Practise for two hours every day!. Practise all your scales and fingering exercises!. Concentrate on your sight reading so that you can learn pieces quickly and easily!. Don't just practise the pieces you have to learn for your grades!.

The person above got it right ; I would think about ten years for most people!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It depends on many things; but the biggest one is how much you practice!. If you do half an hour a day you'll learn at a reasonable rate, if you do an hour then you'll learn more than double as fast!.

If you were putting in an hour every day I'd expect you'd get up to grade eight in about 3 years or so - maybe a bit longer; although it depends on your instrument!. For instance it takes longer to learn a brass instrument as you have to build up muscles - a piano you simply have to get the technique!.

But please don't think music is about getting grades - it is so much more than that!. If taking grade exams is all you care about then you are missing out on so much!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It took me over a decade!!

Don't rush to get your grades, you'll lose the enjoyment!. I think grades are a silly way of measuring someone's musical ability!. All you have to do is know 3 pieces and the scales- a monkey could learn it, given enough time to practise!!

Strengthen your musical knowledge and understanding by getting interested in the sorts of things you're playing, perhaps reading up on them and learning interesting facts and learn pieces that are not on your syllabus that you just want to play because you like them!. If you find practise tedious then you don't have the right approach- you should practise because you enjoy it, not because you are desperate to pass your grades!.

Everyone learns at different speeds!. Heck it took me ages, but that was because I was enjoying it, and I have no regrets now!. Go at your own pace and don't worry about getting your grades!. If you enjoy something it makes it a whole lot easier :o) xWww@Enter-QA@Com

It's usually about a grade a year but when you get to grade 5 you must complete theory exams as well which can take some time!. Keep up on your technique and get your sight reading up so you can learn songs with ease!. Listen to your teacher and practice an hour a day!. Good luck in your studies!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Everyone learns at at different rate, but the more you practice the faster it will happen - it's like anything else, you have to exercise that part of your brain to get it going really fast!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
