Answers:
There are no such things as definitive rules for melody writing; rather there are only a few guidelines that can be broken whenever you feel like it!.
1!. Achieve Balance!.
This is the most complex and eaisest broken guideline because it's in your head how you do this but this generally helps!. How should I explain this!.!.!. Ok say you leap up a couple notes, it would be preferable to step after that so it's balanced!. Keep in mind there are lots of fantastic melodies that do not do this but almost always a melody is balanced out in some context!.
2!. Repitition
This is a huge one!. Use Repition in a melody!. A motive playing throughout a melody generally helps it along (just think Beethoven's 5th)!.
3!. Contrast
Do try and play the same note or even the same series too many times (but sometimes like Beethoven a series of notes over and over can be a great melody)!.
4!. Melody isn't only notes, rthymn is just as important if not more so!.
5!. Do NOT write it on your instrument!. Testing and improving on your instrument is fine but your fingers have conditioned patterns which you want to avoid!.
There are others like try to outline triads if your not using steps but these are broken so often I don't really know about them!.

EDIT: no melody writing is not a talent; it's a skill!. nothing about being born with it or not!. Do you think Mozart's first few melodies were genius!? I bet we would be disappointed with them now compared to any of his even teenage works!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Honestly!.!.!. sit in front of the piano and experiment, it's the best way to do it!. Or at least for me!. Pick a key, start playing different notes from the scale (some notes can be out of the scale, like chromatic passing tones or such), but eventually you'll like what you hear!. And once you get the start of the melody, usually your inspiration or musical ability will help you in finishing it out!. Whatever style you're wanting to write in, listen to some music written in that style and see if it can give you some inspiration, obviously don't steal their melody, but sometimes it can lead you in the right direction!. Good luck!Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'll get thumbs down for this, guaranteed, but it's the truth!.!.!. There are 2 kinds of composers - those who can write melodies, and those who can't!. You're born with it or you aren't, and there's not a way to teach someone how to create music that comes from the heart!. My best advice is to try not to copy a style or model of melody - mean what you write and write with passion and you should see results!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Although it's true that some people have a knack for writing melodies whereas others don't (trust me, I should know- I got top of the school in music in GCSE and A Level, and now doing a degree at a top uni and I cannot compose to save my life!! Honestly, I find it so difficult), the best advice I can give you is to keep it simple!. Within singing range!. Start with a rhythm, then add the notes!. A good melody to me a singable melody!. Once you've got that you can try embellishing it with rich harmony or changing a few notes here and there!. Just get a skeleton first, then add the flesh!. That's what got me through it anyway! Hope this helps xWww@Enter-QA@Com

Start with notes that are within the key of your choosing and then add embelishments!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
