Of course, you are referring to the In A Silent Way sessions box set, right!?

When 'In A Silent Way' was recorded in 1969, it was largely ignored by most jazz critics!. However, this album was the prelude to 'Bitches Brew', which was the breakthrough album for rock jazz/fusion music!.

This was the album where Miles convinced Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea to use electronic keyboards - he didn't have to convince Joe Zawinul, as Joe was always years ahead of his time and already proficient on any keyboard of that time!. This was the emegence of John McLaughlin on electric guitar and even Dave Holland played electric bass, something he has done little of since!.

Joe Zawinul wrote 'In A Silent Way', but only gave Miles a few phrases and vamps to use on this album!. Of course, that's all Miles and the rest of these god-like musicians needed to create a work of art!. Joe later recorded 'In A Silent Way' on his self-titled debut album as a leader and it sounded quite different from the Miles version!. This had a lot of folks scratching their heads!. I believe that it was done this way due to the fact that when Miles used it, it was still a work in progress!.

There are plenty of arguments on how this album ranks in Miles' oeuvre, but I think that this album MAY be the second most IMPORTANT album, not the second best!. Besides, why would anyone vote on what is second best!? However, to say that it is second best, are you saying that 'Kind of Blue' is best!? Here is how I would rank Miles' albums in IMPORTANCE:

1!. The Birth of the Cool - Let's face it this one started it all, it started an entire movement in jazz!.
2!. Kind of Blue - Arguably his best album; again, the beginning of a movement in modal jazz!.
3!. In A Silent Way - Miles' first rock/jazz fusion album!. This one paved the way for #4:
4!. Bitches Brew - Nothing like it before or since!. Though 'In A Silent Way' started the fusion movement, Bitches Brew defined it very clearly!.

So, do I agree that 'In A Silent Way' is second best!? No, I am loath to say anything by Miles is second best!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Steve Sax explain it well there is no need for further discussion, In A Silent Way was the ground breaking album, back then you could tell the music was headed in a different direction that the great Miles was pushing the envelope to bigger and better things!. To follow was Bitches Brew!. In my library I have so many album by Miles rare and hard to find album and even today still searching!. To me Miles was way ahead of the times!. Should I clarify records and CD!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Those sessions are considered important jazz recordings!. They are not underestimated!.

The general public doesn't recognize them!. Like a lot of the mid 1960's jazz, a more adventurous (and less commercial) music was being created!. Like these sessions, many of them featured Tony Williams drumming!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

My second favorite is "Sketches of Spain!."Www@Enter-QA@Com
