I agree with those who think there weren't any real equivalents!. Those are all unique bands/individuals who spawned imitators, but not who had American equivalents!. There were many "these are the next Beatles" stories over the years, including pop bands mostly forgotten now, like The Knack or the Bangles!. I've heard Aerosmith compared to the Rolling Stones, but as a pale imitation, not an equivalent!. Pink Floyd was truly unique, Led Zeppelin arguably started metal music if Black Sabbath didn't, and even the classic rock stations don't much play all the glam-rock that appeared in the wake of Ziggy Stardust (Mott the Hoople, not sure they were American, either, New York Dolls)!. Which is all a bit ironic in that the Beatles and Stones and Zeppelin all started out covering or imitating American rhythm and blues!.
Of course if you meant bands who had as much impact at the time, late 60s and early 70s, I agree with the poster above about Jimi Hendrix!. And the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Velvet Underground, Patti Smith!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
